Fast Forward.

This is a typical article about how harmful our current practices and policies are to the students who got through high school without understanding math, and end up not qualifying for college level courses. The options in place don’t work so well. Many of them end up with all the debt and no credentials. These are my students.

There are lots of solutions out there – different ways to assess, different kinds of math courses – and they say they’ll work for …. As many as half of students who don’t place into college level math. With very few exceptions, how we’re teaching is not part of the discussion.

I’m here for the other half, and for changing the teaching. I think the OER community can create possibilities for adults to conquer the math barriers – and I don’t mean get past some arbitrary assessment learning a few tricks. I mean to understand the math that they thought they couldn’t grasp.
