FIGHTERS AGAINST LIGHT POLLUTION
WHAT DOES THE PRESENTATION INCLUDE?
WHAT IS LIGHT POLLUTION?
Out of all the various pollutions humans create, light pollution gets the least attention.
But light pollution is one of the most prevalent issues facing the developed and developing worlds today.
WHAT IS LIGHT POLLUTION?
The inappropriate or excessive use of artificial light –known as light pollution– can have serious environmental consequences for humans, wildlife, and our climate. Components of light pollution include:
BEST LIGHTNING
HOW TO MEASURE LIGHT POLLUTION?
Sky Quality Meter (SQM)
Photometry
Star-counting
Satellite imagery
Spectroscopy
BORTLE SCALE
SKY QUALITY METER(SQM)
It is used, typically by amateur astronomers, to quantify the skyglow aspect of light pollution and uses units of "magnitudes per square arcsecond" favored by astronomers.
STAR-COUNTING
Skyglow decreases the brightness contrast of the night sky and hence reduces the number of stars visible by unaided eyes.
Satellites capture data by assigning a digital value to each pixel.
SATELLITE IMAGERY
SPECTROSCOPY
Astronomical spectroscopy is adopted to study the spectra of night sky.
PHOTOMETRY
The level of the NSB has mostly been studied at professional astronomical observatories using the traditional astronomical technique of photometry for many years.
The amount of light detected in star-free regions on the CCD images is extracted to estimate the NSB at different wavelength bands.
THE EFFECTS OF LIGHT POLLUTION ON ECONOMY
HOW DOES LIGHT POLLUTION AFFECT THE CLIMATE?
There are two ways for light pollution to affect climate change;
HOW DOES LIGHT POLLUTION AFFECT THE ECO-SYSTEM?
The rhythm of life is orchestrated by the natural diurnal patterns of light and dark, so disruption to these patterns impacts the ecological dynamics.
