Task 1: What makes a podcast?

Podcasts are a unique type of text. We will listen to some examples to try and identify the characteristics of podcasts.

  1. Listen to at least one of the short podcasts on this slide.
  2. On the next slide, answer the following questions about podcasts:
    1. What is the structure?
    2. What is the tone?
    3. What are the features (like music, ads, etc.)?
  3. Make some notes for yourself about the characteristics your podcast will need.

Task 2: Structure and organisation

Writing for a podcast can be very similar to writing for an essay:

  • You need to introduce your theme and Big Question.
  • You need to explain your ideas, supported by quotes and examples from the film. You can devote one ‘body paragraph’ to discussing your theme in Free Solo, and one ‘body paragraph’ to answering your Big Question.
  • You need to conclude with a short summary, and an ‘outro’ thanking your listeners and inviting them to tune in to your next episode.

Think about transitions between the different parts of your podcast. You can also include some ‘ads’ or ‘sponsors’.

Remember to name your podcast!

Recording Tips:

  • Speak clearly
  • Use a variation in your tone, pace, volume
  • Record each paragraph/section separately so that you can arrange it with sound effects in your final podcast
