Stop to Smell the Roses
An old neighborhood in Portland OR is built in the shape of an X. A circular garden lies at the heart of the neighborhood; the streets lead out from there to form the X. Planted in each of the angles of each X is a large rose garden. People in the neighborhoods care for the 4 rose gardens, either by adopting a bed & caring for it all season, or by joining in a group maintenance session on a Saturday morning.
My bed is Chihuly 2004, in the East Garden. I’m learning from the other gardeners, who are passionate about these gardens. The gardeners are my community, but when I am alone weeding, it’s really the roses I belong to.. They teach me patience. When I go too fast, they stick me, then apologize with their glorious scent. They connect me to the simple truth of the earth. They bless me.

This is a postcard of stamps collected by my father-in-law over decades. We had a whole afternoon on holiday gluing them to canvas and chairs. My flower is made up of all the stamps I could find with plants and flowers on them - all a bit meta.
This postcard has already traversed the globe over many, many decades - I used all countries that I could find.

I made this map a few CLMOOCs ago, thank to a remixable template by Chad Sansing. Much of it still represents my connected travels through networks and spaces. I imagine I am riding along, headphones on with a CLMOOC mix tape, going to meet some friends at some of the stops. I hope to meet you there, too.

This collaged Artist Trading Card is one of several I”ve made into postcards using Zazzle and then sent around the world through postcrossing.com.
This particular card means a lot to me because it speaks to my musical heritage, from the shaped note hymnals in the church I grew up in to the country icons whose songs I sang with my Mom. We didn’t have a radio in her car for a long time as I was growing up (Dad had a tin ear and didn’t see the need for one), so we made our own music.

In my intro I stated truthfully that I am a ocean-and-mountain girl stuck in the American Midwest. Nonetheless, some of the CLMOOC activities, especially #SilentSunday and the #postcard project have provoked me to be more aware of the awesomeness of my life, including the beauty found in this prairie country.
David Foster Wallace described it thus: “Ale-colored sunshine and pale sky and whorls of cirrus so high they cast no shadow. Insects all business all the time.”
