What is an “RA”, anyway?

RA stands for “Representative Assembly”

  • It is the annual meeting that sets the priorities of the organization for the year
    • The MEA RA happens in May
    • The NEA RA happens in July

The MEA RA Timeline

Late December: Local Presidents are notified of vacancies as are

delegates whose terms are up

3rd Week January: Notice of Intent forms for MEA RA delegates

who are elected statewide due to MEA

Early March: Notice of intent/certification of election form

for MEA RA delegates who are elected in their

locals are due to MEA

MEA RA Allocation of Delegates

(MEA Constitution, Article V, Section 2 Bylaws, Article II, Section 1)

For active Teachers & ESPs

35-104 =1 delegate

105-174=2 delegates

175-244=3 delegates

245-314=4 delegates

315-384=5 delegates

385 + each additional 70 members or major portion

thereof=1 additional delegate

Affiliates with 34 or fewer members are “clustered”

For Student-MEA:

35-199=1 delegate

200-499=2 delegates

500-799=3 delegates

For MEA-Retired:

500 members or major portion thereof = 1 delegate

The NEA RA Timeline

3rd Week January: Nomination deadline/Notice of Intent forms are due for elections conducted by the MEA prior to the RA: (MEA Board of Directors, NEA District Delegates, MEA Representative Assembly Statewide Delegates) and elections conducted by the MEA at the RA

Early in February: Ballots are mailed to local Presidents for elections conducted by MEA prior to the Representative Assembly

Early March: Ballots are due back to MEA

Early April: NEA Representative Assembly Delegate forms are due to MEA

NEA RA Allocation of Delegates

NEA Constitution, Article III, Section 2 NEA Bylaw 3-1

State Funded Delegates = 1:1,000 Active members

Local Funded Delegates = 1:150 Active members or major fraction

Clustered Local Delegates = 1:150 Active members or major fraction

Student-MEA

50 Student members = 1 delegate

750 Student members = 2 delegates

Each 500 Student members thereafter = 1 delegate

MEA-Retired

1:50 for the first 50 Retired members

Each 1,000 Retired members thereafter - 1 delegate
