Exploring Reading

Exploring Reading is a year-long intervention solution designed to guide all students to master essential comprehension strategies across a range of complex texts.

The goal of Exploring Reading is to guide all essential comprehension strategies, integrate multiple strategies to comprehend complex text, and to apply the strategies to read a wide range of text types and lengths.
Every unit breaks down key comprehension skills includes a variety of modalities as well as differentiation tips for teachers. Teachers don’t just spend one day on a concept; they have 20-days of instruction.
As with all Teacher Created Materials, there are a variety of high-quality texts are at the center of Exploring Reading. Students enjoy reading across content areas and genres with topics that attract students to read including our continued, long-standing relationship with TIME for Kids. The variety of texts integrate multiple strategies to comprehend complex text apply the strategies to read a wide range of text types and lengths.
And… Spanish is available in grades K-3!

Comprehension Strategies

Units of instruction are designed to build key comprehension strategies. Experts agree that students benefit from explicit comprehension instruction using good reader strategies (Duke 2005; Duke and Pearson 2002). This explicit instruction includes defining the strategy, modeling the use of the strategy, providing prompts and feedback to guide students’ use of the strategy, and discussing the use of the strategy.
The use of cognitive strategies for monitoring comprehension and metacognition (thinking about thinking) must take place before, during, and after reading for true comprehension to occur. Students must be taught and provided opportunities to practice which strategy is best to use and when to apply it while reading. This is the purpose of reading-comprehension instruction.
Focusing on fewer strategies allows teachers and students to break down the skill into its parts; work with each part repeatedly through multiple reads of the text. The result is a deeper understanding of how and when to use each strategy.

(CLICK EACH) Day 1 of each lessons introduce the texts with word work, graphic and text walks asking students to make predications and access prior knowledge.
Students continue to work with the text after initial readings, building knowledge and returning to the text looking for text evidence and support in Days 2 and 3. By the Day 3, students use the strategy as they reread the text and discuss the text structure and big idea
Day 4 provides opportunities for quick formative assessment and vocabulary work. Teachers may find the work in day 4 suitable for independent stations to provide even more instructional flexibility.
On Day 5, students can extend their learning with a choice of activities that incorporate collaborative learning and writing assignments for students to synthesize and process their new learning. Students use ideas from the text to write, draw, or create independently or with partners.

Why Teach Word Families?

The brain loves patterns.
Linguistic and sound patterns help us readers recognize and decode new words.

�

Learning just 38 word families help students create �650 common words!

**PRESENTER NOTE: Only use this slide when presenting Building Vocabulary: Foundations Levels K-2**

At the primary grade level, lessons tap into word patterns called word families, phonograms, or rimes. A word family is a part of a syllable that begins with the vowel and that contains any consonants after the vowels. Examples of common word families are –am, –et, –ick, –ob, and –ud.
The value of a word family approach is that the sounds represented by word families are quite consistent (–ick always says /ick/) and that knowledge of word families can help a reader decode a vast majority of words in English. For example, knowing that –am represents the sound /am/ can help a reader decode one syllable words such as ham, jam, and slam. That same knowledge can also help a reader at least partially decode longer words such as ambulance, Alabama, hamster, and camera.
(CLICK) Indeed, Dr. Edward Fry (1998) found that knowledge of 38 word families can give a reader the ability to decode over 650 one-syllable words. Research and scholarly opinion suggest that a word family approach to early word learning is one of the best ways to teach phonics (Adams 1990; Goswami 2000; Rasinski and Padak 2013). (BV TG page 17)
Learning these word families enables students to decode new words.

Why Teach Roots?

90% of two or more syllable words are from Greek or Latin origin.
Students can learn 8 to 10 new words per week through direct instruction.
By learning just one Greek or Latin root, students can easily learn 10 to 20 connected words.

Simple Lesson Structure

Lessons are easy to follow and integrate into your daily instruction. Each lesson includes up to 90 minutes of instruction. For Summer School, teachers can choose how to condense the five parts to meet the needs of students. (CLICK)

On Day 1 Meet the Root, students are formally presented with a root, its meaning, and several words that exhibit its meaning in different contexts. During the practice portions, students generate additional words that contain the root and write sentences that put the words in context. Meet the Root Slides provide visual support supplement instruction for each lesson.
On Day 2 Divide and Conquer, students “conquer” words by writing the meaning of each word part and finally, the meaning of the entire word.
On Day 3 Read and Reason, students read a variety of passages that use word roots in context and then answer questions in pairs or small groups about the root-based vocabulary.
On Day 4 Combine and Create, students compose English words from the word roots.
On Day 5 Extend and Explore, students work individually, with partners, or in small groups to create applications for the new vocabulary. In the Review: Cloze Text section, students use a word bank with eight words from the lesson and the paragraph’s context to complete sentences. This activity can be used as an assessment or for addition support.

Since building and growing literacy skills is a complex task, students will also get practice with writing, phonics and word study, and fluency practice with reader’s theater.
Reader’s theater provides teachers and students with a change of pace from the regular school day through performance activities that allow all students to participate with the same scripts. Created in partnership with Dr. Timothy Rasinski, this reading series is designed to teach reading, listening, and speaking skills through the performance. Students will improve fluency and comprehension by reading and rereading the scripts. Students will practice interacting cooperatively, reading aloud, and using expressive voices and gestures. The purpose of Focused Instruction: Mathematics Intervention is to help struggling students build both skills and confidence in math.

It’s grounded in the Concrete–Representational–Abstract (CRA) method—teacher-led, explicit, and systematic instruction that closes skill gaps.

The instructional design uses CRA to guide learning: hands-on exploration, visual models, and algorithms. Each lesson also includes purposeful games that build problem-solving, fluency, and collaboration, with frequent progress monitoring to show growth.

For teachers, support comes through the TCM Learning Platform: real-time feedback, reports, auto-scored assessments, professional learning videos, and lesson slide decks—plus multilingual and scaffolded supports to reach all learners.

The program is flexible—it works across Grades K–5 and can be slotted into intervention blocks, RTI/MTSS frameworks, or before and after school at any point in the year.
