Classroom Rules:
Classroom Procedures:
1. Every day you should: come into class, have a seat, and get started on your “Science Question of the Day.”
2. Come to class prepared to learn. That means have out your book, notebook, and any assignments that are due. (You will be given 3-5 minutes at the beginning of each day to prepare for the day’s lesson…UTILIZE THIS TIME!)
3. Homework is to be turned in at the beginning of class. If it is not in my hand by the time that I get to your desk, it will be considered late, and a deduction to your grade will be made.
4. At the end of the period, an assessment will be given over the day’s lesson. Assessments include, but are not limited to: pop quizzes, notes check, worksheets, summaries, etc. It is mandatory that you pay attention to the lesson in order to perform well on the day’s summary assessment.
5. When the bell rings to signal the end of the period, stay in your seats until you are dismissed.
6. Before you leave the room, check in and around your desk for papers and trash. Anything left behind will result in one break detention for every item left.
7. A “Student Station” is in the back of the room for your convenience. You may use anything that is on this station. This is also where assignments will be turned in and where assignments will be picked up if you are absent. You may also check here for any work that you may have missed due to an absence.
8. If you have a question, RAISE YOUR HAND!
9. If I need your attention, I will raise my hand. If you see my hand raised at any time, I need you to stop what you are doing, turn to face me, and listen!
10. Do not leave your seat without permission.
11. If a visitor enters the room, you are to be on your BEST behavior.
12. If you have a comment or suggestion about this class, you may leave your comment/suggestion in the suggestion box on the student station.
13. Beware of the “Watch Rule!” (For every second that I have to wait on the class to get settled and focused, a second will be added at the ring of the bell.)
14. Graded papers will be kept in an assigned folder in the back of the room.
15. If you need to see me before or after school (ex. make up work, extra help, etc.), you must make an appointment via the appointment cards at the student station.
16. Heading your papers: Top right hand corner—Name, Date & Period 🡪 ALWAYS!
17. Each student will be issued an EMERGENCY bathroom/nurse pass for each semester. If you don’t have a pass, you may NOT leave the room. You only get 2 passes per year, so use them WISELY! (*If you have a medical condition that requires you to leave the room regularly, please let me know. A parent/doctor note will be required.) At the end of the semester, an unused bathroom pass will become 5 bonus points.
18. A Parking-Lot board is located at the front of the room. It is used to post available bonus point opportunities and will also house papers without names.
19. If you come to class late, you must have a note from a teacher or the office. Notes go in the appropriate box on the podium that is located at the front of the room.
20. You can receive tickets throughout the year for various things that can be cashed in for rewards. Tickets can be earned for answering questions, being present, wearing RED on Fridays, bringing in lab supplies, being well behaved, being kind, good grades, etc.
21. Technology is to be used only for instructional purposes. BYOD is welcomed and will aid in learning opportunities, but it can only be used when the teacher allows. (A sign posted in the classroom will display allowed instances.)
22. A “Wall of Fame” showcases students who score 90-100 on Unit Exams and BIG 20 tests. Recognition and prizes will be given to students who are posted to the wall.
23. Try your very best. There will be challenges ahead in this course, but FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION!
Consequences
***Consequences depend on the rule broken. Some broken rules will result in a warning the first time. Other broken rules will result in deeper consequences. Consequences include, but are not limited to:

Absences
If there is an excused absence from school, students will be given 5 days to make up any missed work. After 5 days, ANY grades missed become a “ZER0” (no matter the assignment). IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE STUDENT TO GET ANY MISSED WORK. If you miss a day:

As you know, here at Armuchee High School, we make a sincere effort to provide fair education to your child. In my classroom, I pride myself in being fair with my students and strive to provide equality to every person. With this being said, I would like to remind you that the grades that a student receives in my class are grades that the student has earned. I do not give grades or change grades for students unless it can be done for every student that I teach. Please read over the syllabus and understand how students are graded and what happens if they miss too many days without making up their work. If you are the parent/guardian of a senior, please understand that in order to graduate, your child must pass Forensic Science. Failure to do so means that your child is in jeopardy of graduating at the end of the year. Please be aware of this situation and take steps to avoid any future problems. If you need further information, please contact the counselor’s office or myself.

Forensic Science

Dear Parent or Guardian,
Your student has selected to participate in the Forensic Science course at Armuchee High School. The course is meant to be an introduction to criminalistics. This is the field of science devoted to the observation, collection, analysis, and interpretation of crime scene evidence.
Students are usually very enthusiastic about being placed into the role of a crime scene analyst. Our class will be busy diving into a hands-on approach to learn about the work of a forensic scientist. This class will consist of labs/activities, online lectures, class lectures, projects, experiments, mock crime scenes, and media literacy research. Most lab activities will be given to the student in this framework: they are given evidence from a crime scene which must be carefully analyzed and interpreted in order to assist in determining the guilt or innocence of a suspect. I also require students to analyze a media literacy piece from time to time. This will require that they watch a criminal investigation show and analyze the processes and procedures of the show and compare them to the real-life work of a C.S.I. We will also view media literacy programs (Forensic Files, CSI, Netflix documentaries, etc.) and listen to podcasts (such as Crime Junkies and Up and Vanished) as I believe this is the most interesting and educational way of depicting the role of a C.S.I.
Due to the nature of the course, some material, videos, slides, and lectures will contain graphic content. (For example, students will view material containing blood and gore, discuss the collection of materials in sexual assault cases, and hear some inappropriate language.) Many of my presentations contain graphic images of crime scenes and may include images of victims. We will also discuss topics/crimes related to human anatomy and bodily fluids. For this reason, I am asking that a parent or guardian of the student enrolled in this course sign a consent form allowing your child to participate in the activities of this course. Your signature indicates that you are aware of the contents which will be discussed in this course. If you wish for your child to be exempt from anything mentioned in this letter, please indicate this request below.
