New MN Cannabis Law and impact on international students

  • The State of Minnesota passed a law legalizing cannabis (recreational marijuana) for adults over the age of 21. This law went into effect on August 1, 2023.
  • Although some states have legalized the use of marijuana, federal law still prohibits the use or possession of marijuana. If you are not a U.S. citizen, violations of federal law can negatively impact your immigration status. The consequences could vary depending on the circumstances, but could involve a fine, jail time, or even deportation. You can read more details here.
  • If you are not a U.S. citizen, then you are not legally allowed to use marijuana.
