Even in the 2010s, recognized that the very architecture of the World Wide Web was betraying us.

Centralized networks: all controlled by a central authority – usually a company, person or a government. It maintains the code, the servers and the data. Think Meta. Google. TikTok. Ultimately: you have to trust that central authority to do what’s in your best interest.
On the Right: Distributed networks. all these nodes are interconnected, they communicate with one another to achieve a common goal. Computation is distributed across many nodes, but one entity can still control all those nodes. Think Amazon Cloud.
Center: Decentralized networks. Just like in the distributed network, the computation is running on interconnected nodes. But the difference is that no node it telling all the others what to do. The code runs on a Peer-to-peer network, and no one node has control over all of them.

So what do we mean by Web 3?

Web 1.0– when Tim Berners-Lee’s WWW came into popular use.

Typically, a users create self-hosted websites would be made up of hyperlinked text, files, and applications that you would read. Or maybe download. Pages were static.

. That’s why some people call this the READ-ONLY Web.

3) Then around 2000, we get Web 2.0. You start getting the big platforms like Facebook, Twitter. People can interact with content. This phase is called the READ-WRITE Web, or sometimes the social web. This is what we use today. This web empowers everyone to become a publisher & share ideas. But in order to do this, we use enormous platforms that control access, privacy and security.

4) Finally, you have Web 3.0– starts around the same time as the bitcoin blockchain around 2009 or 10. The central innovation of Web 3 is that blockchains are verifiable. Some say they are “trustless” systems because you don’t have to trust FB anymore. The trust lies in the blockchain data itself.
