Instructions

What’s a “README”?

In the early days of software distribution, floppy disks would come with a note file named “README”, which you would open first to get installation instructions.

Similarly, a team README is a getting to know you exercise where you share with us your “instructions” for a successful working relationship that aligns to your base needs and style.

How to use this template:

  1. Copy slide 4, and fill it out individually.
  2. Once everyone in your team is ready, gather take 5 minutes each to share your README slide.
  3. Keep this document handy, and never hesitate to revisit it!

Example: Sam’s README

I don’t like it when I hear people say:

  • “Let me get back to you”, without a clear timeline
  • “I don’t like it” with no reasons or constructive action items
  • “[name] told me to do it”

The cultural values I care about the most are

  • Entrepreneurship — taking ownership, and being excited and outcome-driven
  • Trust - I trust expertise, intent, and commitments until proven otherwise
  • Respect/kindness: understanding people have different strengths and weaknesses and working together to bring out the best in one another; not making assumptions

I’ll get frustrated when people:

  • Don’t follow up and close the loop
  • Come with a problem but no proposed solutions
  • Communicate aggressively or passive aggressively
  • Prejudge me without getting to know me

The way I like to communicate is:

  • By being candid and honest
  • With thoughtful feedback
  • With some sarcasm and dad jokes!

My areas of improvement are:

  • Learn to be more transparent and assertive
  • Stay strong on what I think is right
  • Ask for help when there are too many things to do
