Mental Health

  • Duke and UNC both offer Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), which are committed to promoting mental health and well-being among students.

  • CAPS services at both universities provide individual counseling and group therapy, workshops on mental health topics, and referrals to community providers for continued care.

  • Students can access CAPS services free of charge. CAPS offices are located at the Student Wellness Center (Duke) and Campus Health Services (UNC).

  • CAPS is available after-hours to address urgent mental health concerns.

  • If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis and is at risk of self-harm, please contact the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting “988”.

How to Access CAPS Services

Duke University

UNC-Chapel Hill

If you would like to begin services at CAPS, please call their front desk at (919) 660-1000 between the hours of 9:00am to 4:00pm, Monday – Friday.

You will then complete some paperwork and meet with a CAPS staff member for approximately 15 - 20 minutes to discuss your specific goals. A collaborative plan will be developed based on your needs. This may include referrals to a psychiatrist, a community mental health provider, group counseling, or a CAPS counselor.

All students or Postdoctoral Fellows begin their work with CAPS through an initial assessment. These brief consultations occur without an appointment for students seeking counseling or psychological services for the first time at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Other Wellness Resources

Duke University

UNC-Chapel Hill

DuWell (part of the Student Wellness Center) engages students through a variety of wellness experiences across campus in an effort to promote wellness, manage stress, reduce anxiety, and reduce risk.

DuWell’s wellness programs include classes on meditation and yoga, arts and crafts (painting, knitting, etc.), socials, and a global conversations series on cultural perspectives, world news, and local events. DuWell also provides resources that address sexual health and healthy relationships as well as alcohol and substance abuse.

UNC Student Wellness seeks to enhance individual and collective health through health education and campus outreach, individual and group skills development, and direct student support. UNC students have access to professional wellness coaching services at no-cost. Additionally, Student Wellness provides resources for promoting sexual health and addressing alcohol and substance abuse and hosts wellness webinars as well as other community-building programs.

Academic Support

  • Duke fellows have access to communication and writing services that are unique to the MIDP program and can take non-credit classes in public speaking, writing, and other topics.

  • UNC fellows can utilize UNC’s Writing and Learning Centers, which provide peer tutoring, academic coaching, individual writing support, and other services.
    • English language support provided through Speaking Group
    • Check out the Odum Institute for workshops on quantitative research

  • After meeting with your course instructor, teaching assistant, and academic advisor, if you are still struggling in a particular course, the Rotary Peace Center can offer assistance with finding a tutoring and arranging tutoring sessions.

Writing and Public Speaking

Communication and writing services unique to MIDP.

There are practicums, listed below, which carry 0 credits and do not count toward the degree requirements. In addition, MIDP offers one-on-one tutoring upon request.

The UNC Writing Center is an instructional service that provides writing assistance for students, staff, and faculty. Students can meet with a writing coach face-to-face or online during any stage of the writing process to discuss ideas, explore writing strategies, and receive draft feedback.

The Writing Center also offers Speaking Group, which welcomes American and international students and scholars to practice English speaking and build global relationships in the local community. Additionally, the Writing Center hosts mini-courses in research communication (non-credit), writing groups, and other workshops.

Learning

MIDP fellows seeking academic assistance should contact Kristen Aquilino, Director of International Student and Academic Services for the MIDP program, who can connect students with individualized academic support resources within the Sanford School of Public Policy.

UNC’s Learning Center is an instructional service that provides academic support to both UNC undergraduates and graduate students. It offers academic coaching, peer tutoring, ADHD/LD support, STEM support, and more. The Center also provides test prep resources as well as workshops and learning groups.

Quantitative Subjects / Research

Duke’s Center for Data and Visualization Sciences offers support in data science, data sources, data management and curation, data visualization, and mapping and GIS. It provides regular short-term consultations at no-cost, and the Data and Visualization workshop series – which is free and open to the public – covers a range of tools and methods for data-driven research.

The Odum Institute for Research in Social Sciences provides a range of consulting services on quantitative and qualitative methods, GIS and spatial analysis, survey research and data management. The Institute also offers over 60 short courses and workshops every year, many of which are free to UNC students. Brief consultations are also available to UNC students free of charge, and Online Statistical consulting and Qualtrics hours are always free.

Campus Recreation

  • Your student fees cover the cost of a campus recreation membership at your respective university. Use your student ID to access facilities and reserve equipment.

  • You can use all facilities and equipment, play intramural sports, and take certain fitness classes for free
    • Additionally, campus recreation offers outdoor expeditions, challenge courses, specialty fitness classes, and certain certification courses (for extra charges)

Area Studies Centers

Duke’s international and area studies centers engage Duke students and faculty from across the social sciences, arts and humanities, public affairs, environment and professional schools in the study of world’s societies, cultures, economies, customs and languages. These area studies centers each play a role in promoting internationalization on the Duke campus and beyond.

Center units include the Asian/Pacific Studies Institute, the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, the Center for Slavic, Eurasian, and East European Studies, the Concilium on Southern Africa, the Duke Islamic Studies Center, and the Duke University Middle East Studies Center.

UNC-Chapel Hill’s six Global Area Studies Centers provide services and resources for instruction, learning and research related to global issues, world regions and modern foreign languages. The Centers cooperate to better serve the University and public by hosting their own events as well as informing a wider audience about events, research, and funding through newsletters, event calendars, and social media.

These units are the African Studies Center, the Carolina Asia Center, the Center for European Studies, the Center for Slavic, Eurasian, and East European Studies, the Center for Middle East and Islamic Studies, and the Institute for the Study of the Americas.

Miscellaneous

English for International Students (EIS) supports multilingual graduate and professional students in becoming confident, independent users of academic and professional English. The program provides effective, individualized English-language instruction, advising, and assessment centered on students’ dynamic field-specific communication needs.

The Global Grads initiative (part of the Graduate School’s Student Success unit) provides numerous opportunities and resources to support international graduate students, including ESL speaking groups, networking and community building events, and more.

Campus and Student Life

  • Duke and UNC have a vibrant student life and are home to hundreds of student organizations
    • While student life is largely driven by undergraduates, there are several organizations which are open to graduate student membership.
    • Duke fellows can join the MIDP Student Council and submit papers through the Sanford Journal of Public Policy. Many other opportunities exist through the School of Public Policy.

  • Much of student life revolves around athletics – especially football and basketball – in the fall and spring as Duke and UNC’s teams are nationally recognized. Try to attend a game or two if you can!
    • UNC fellows can speak to Tom about how to attend Carolina games

  • Both universities frequently host performing arts events through Duke Performances and Carolina Performing Arts. Durham is also home to DPAC, which is the largest performing arts center in the Carolinas and hosts primarily national touring acts.

  • Durham and Chapel Hill are both very diverse towns, and there are many opportunities to join various cultural and religious groups.

Things to Do in North Carolina

  • North Carolina is renowned in the United States for its natural beauty and geographic diversity. In the Triangle, we are a 3-hour drive from the beaches of the Outer Banks and a 4-hour drive from the Appalachian Mountains.

  • Local State Parks and Natural Areas: Eno River State Park, Umstead State Park, Jordan Lake, Falls Lake, Brumley Nature Preserve
    • Farther Away: Raven Rock, Hanging Rock, Pilot Mountain
    • Gardens: Sarah P. Duke Gardens and the North Carolina Botanical Gardens

  • NC is also known for its museums. The North Carolina Museum of Arts is internationally acclaimed and one of the top 25 museums in the U.S.
    • Others: Nasher Museum of Art, NC Museum of Natural Sciences, Museum of Life and Science, Ackland Art Museum, etc.
    • Special Mention: The International Civil Rights Center and Museum in Greensboro

  • Each October, Raleigh hosts the NC State Fair, which is one of the largest and oldest state fairs in the United States.
