S3L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the similarities and differences between plants, animals, and habitats found within geographic regions (Blue Ridge Mountains, Piedmont, Coastal Plains, Valley and Ridge, and Appalachian Plateau) of Georgia.

a. Ask questions to differentiate between plants, animals, and habitats found within Georgia’s geographic regions.

b. Construct an explanation of how external features and adaptations (camouflage, hibernation, migration, mimicry) of animals allow them to survive in their habitat.

c. Use evidence to construct an explanation of why some organisms can thrive in one habitat and not in another.

S3L2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the effects of pollution (air, land, and water) and humans on the environment.

a. Ask questions to collect information and create records of sources and effects of pollution on the plants and animals.

b. Explore, research, and communicate solutions, such as conservation of resources and recycling of materials, to protect plants and animals.

Journal: Where do pollinators go in winter?

Visit the gardens and students conduct a quick count of the number of pollinators in winter.

Look at Great GA Pollinator Summer (Aug) census count numbers….Analyze data…Students will use the results to determine what pollinator was found the most, and the least. Make a chart in journal from most to least.. What plant are most pollinators attracted to?

Journal Entry: What can we do at CFES to increase the least small bees- number of pollinators around the school?

Journal Entry: What else can we add to our pollinator garden to increase the number of pollinators? Discuss different shelters that are needed by pollinators: Bee Hotels

Journal entry: How can I build a Bee Hotel? (reflect back in journals to Dr. Nolan’s Visit in the Fall)

  • An ‘ecosystem service’ is a benefit that an organism or ecosystem provides to people. Is pollination an ecosystem service? Why or why not?

  • Why/how do you think pollinators contribute to the biodiversity and resilience of ecosystems? Provide an example.

Design ideas to research BEFORE planning.

  • How long should the tubes be?
  • What size diameter should the tubes be? Should they all be the same diameter?
  • How many tubes should there be in each house?
  • Does the house need to be hung up?
  • Where should the houses be placed/positioned? Ex-towards the sun? Away from the sun?
  • Can the house get wet? Should it be out of the rain?
  • When should the houses be placed outside?
  • How far apart do the houses need to be?

Design and build a pollinator hotel to provide shelter and a place for bees to lay eggs.

The Pollinator Hotel MUST:

  • Have various sizes of nesting tubes
  • Have something to keep it dry
  • Provide shade to nested bee eggs
  • Pass the shake test IMG_9549.MOV
  • Be able to attach 3 feet off the ground

What’s Next??

Completed Bee Hotels will be placed in the pollinator Garden in the Spring. Some will be sold at the CFES Market with other Bee/Luffa related products created by all grade level students.

Journal Entry: How can we observe and use data to help us choose the best location for our Bee Houses? (keep tract of temperature in bee houses)

Things to think about:

Where is the best location for our bee houses?

How many should we place on our CFES school grounds?

How much should we sell the extra Bee Houses for?

How should we keep track of the temperature within our bee houses?

Student Ideas:

Use an infrared thermometer -

Record daily temperatures inside bee houses for a week at different bee house locations including:

Sun

Shade

Partly Sunny
