Friday is flexible attendance in my Art classes

  • This is only true in my classes. Most other teachers do not do this. Do not pressure them.
  • I AM expected to take attendance. And I will. But you can come whenever you want on Friday to give me your class time.
  • The KTS Talent Show should start in the afternoon. �I will be playing it. :)
  • For example, you could come before classes (8:00ish), at lunch, or during other class times. Ask your other teachers for permission to come to my class. Don’t mess with their trust. You can bring a non-disruptive friend who follows COVID rules.
  • If you are finished your clay work, you can start sketching things for your exam project, or start gathering images.
  • I will be leaving the building at 3:30 for the holidays.

Health and Safety

  • It’s going to dry out your hands. Gloves are available.�
  • You will look foolish if you eat it.�
  • It will stain clothes. Use an apron. Use your usual stain remover to clean your clothes.�
  • Clay dust very slowly collects in your lungs. Good clean up prevents this.�
  • Throwing clay is creates clay dust in the end. There is an alternate drawing assignment (a still life of clay pots) for people who cannot use clay responsibly, period.

Advice for clay

  • Build the coils and basic shape in one day.

  • Oh my gosh wrap up your clay. Once it is gone, it is gone.

  • Make it smoother than you think you need.

  • Avoid flexing your clay. Add bandages over cracks.

  • Make sure you dry your table with paper towel to avoid streaks

  • Add to your idea development or prepare your graphite transfer while your slip dries.

A basic coil pot

Remember: dry clay becomes unusable. THERE IS ALMOST NO EXTRA CLAY.

Leaving your clay unwrapped dries it out. As well, the more you handle it, the faster it dries. So much of doing clay well is about knowing how to get what you want while touching the clay as little as possible.

  1. Squeeze a clay disk about 1cm thick and 5-7cm in diameter.�
  2. Make some coils of clay about 1 cm thick. Stretch the coils, don’t squish them. Build the walls of your pot using the coils, leaving no gaps. �
  3. Wait until you have things roughly shaped before smoothing. Smooth things out by smearing coils together. �
  4. Paddle the sides with a wooden spoon to shape and strengthen them. �
  5. Use a rib and your fingers to smooth your pot.

  • The first layer of slip (takes 5 minutes). Expect this to be streaky!�
  • Time to finish your idea generation! :)
  • The second layer of slip (takes about five minutes)�
  • Wrap up your clay loosely at the end of class!
