Expansion of Ideas
Expansion of idea is to elaborate an idea in a paragraph form.
Paragraph : A Para is necessarily a series of connected sentences which develops one topic sentence.
Topic sentence : It is a subject / proposition/ statement expressed in a sentence good topic sentence is brief and encapsulates the central theme.
Ideally it is written in three parts –
(1) Introductory paragraph
(2) Core content
(3) Concluding paragraph.

Essentials of a good paragraph�1. Topic sentence
Most important sentence in the paragraph. It tells the subject of the paragraph
It can be at the beginning or at the end.
Example (Beginning) : Summer vacations are the most wonderful periods in a school going child’s life. (Topic sentence : Summer vacations)
Example (End) : … Thus television can not be considered as effective tool for stimulating the imagination.

2.Support
It must contain specific details, examples and facts to support the topic sentence.
Example: Writing a paragraph on television needs support of specific ideas, points and examples to support the main theme.

3.Unity
A good paragraph must have unity. Thematic link and logical connection between two sentences is important.
Example 1. unjustified version: My friends love shopping a lot but I am not interested to watch movie.
Example 1. justified version: My friends love shopping a lot but I am not interested to join them in it.
The above example is grammatically correct but thematically incorrect.

4.Style:
Style of the paragraph consists of two important element:
1. Audience
2.Purpose
The same details can be presented with the language stuffed with literary words or in a simple and plain language depending on

1.Paragraph should have unity of theme…single idea ahould be followed.
2.Topic sentence at the beginning or at the end.
3.The best paragraph is not too lengthy, too short.
4. Follow logical sequencing of thought.(coherence)
5.Use connecting words such as therefore, so that, and, also, thus, finally, firstly,etc.
