A Brief Breakdown

Who: Any Tyee Middle School Student (no experience required!)

What: An after-school club dedicated to teaching the skills needed to participate in speech and debate

When: Tuesdays and Thursdays (5:00-6:30 pm)

Tournaments

  • Three or Four NWAIS competitions this year (11/18, 1/20, March, PF)
  • Practice debates against peers
  • Middle School Debate (1 prepped topic, 2 impromptu topics)
  • PF Tournament at the end of the year

Debate Team: Speaker Roles

  • First speaker: Presents case
  • Second speaker: Expands on first speakers points and refutes the opposing team's first speaker's points.
  • Third speaker: Refutes all arguments and weighs both side's impacts to say why their side should win
  • ARESI: Assertion, Reasoning, Evidence, Significance, Impact
  • CWI: Claim, Warrant, Impact

  • 2 labs(Upper and lower)
  • Upper lab for returning members
  • Lower lab for new members(little debate experience)

  • Introduction to all other forms of speech and debate
  • Great skill-set to have
    • Much better for communication
  • Allows for better argument generation
    • Plays into debate

Registration

  • We will accept up to 42 students as of right now.
  • Registration fee: $60 (if your family has concerns regarding this fee, please contact us directly)
  • First come-first serve, with priority given to previous members.
  • The Registration Link can be found on the PTSA E-News.
    • Will open at 7pm Friday 9/22/2023
  • First day of club is still being decided, and email will be sent to all finalized members ahead of time.

Parent Volunteers

  • We need parent supervisors to be able to hold meeting in-person, at Tyee.
  • We will be sending out a signup form/sheet after club members have been finalized, so please sign-up for any days you are available to supervise our club.

FAQ

  • Will there be any homework?
    • max 1-2 hours of HW each week
    • Mostly case writing
  • Does my student have to attend both days of club meetings?
    • While we understand that students may be busy with other commitments, it is highly recommended that your student attends both Tuesdays and Thursdays for club meetings. This is mainly because we will be covering different content each day.
