What to expect for 8^th Grade

Longer periods. No blocks. No A,B,C Days.

Students will have opportunity to select classes for at least 2 of the 8 periods of the day.
Some elective classes carry high school credit.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

Students can earn 2 to 3 credits toward graduation

One of the many great benefits of being in Parma City Schools is that as an 8th grader, you can start earning high school credits. So what is a high school credit? A high school credit is something you will receive for earning a passing grade in a high school class. Typically, passing a full year high school class will earn you 1 credit and passing a semester or half year class will earn you a ½ credit. Currently, students need to earn 20 credits in the categories shown on the chart to meet the graduation requirements for any of our high schools. You will have the opportunity to earn 2 of 20 credit hours to graduate before you even enter 9th grade. Students recommended to take Algebra I can even earn an extra credit towards graduation as that credit counts towards one of the 4 credit needed in math.. You may also earn a fine arts requirement by taking a music class and elective credits if you take Intro to business and/or STEM.

Students may only take a course 1 time.
Students may take 2 different music classes.
No student should take more than 1 World Language.
Art 8 and Intro to Woods are the only electives that do NOT carry a high school credit.

High school grades will give a perspective employer an indication of the type of worker a student is
Your high school transcript will begin with the grades earned in these elective classes

Grades are the number one item colleges use to select students for admission. Colleges want students who have already demonstrated an ability to do well in classes and put in the hard work. Grades are also a key factor in qualifying for scholarship money. College is expensive. The average cost for going to a college in Ohio is around $22,000 a year or around $90,000 for 4 years. A scholarship, which is money given by a college or another organization to help pay for school, is one way to lessen that cost. Having good grades provides more scholarship opportunities. High school grades will give a prospective employer an indication of the type of worker a student is. For students looking to get a job during or after high school, having good grades will make securing a job easier or give a student a leg up in competing for a position. Colleges and universities will look at your high school transcript, which is in essence a report card of all the grades a student earns while in high school, when considering you for admission to their college. Your high school transcript will begin with the grades earned in these elective classes.

ONLINE REGISTRATION�

The window to register will begin on January 18^th and end on January 25^th.
Students and parents should watch the “How to register for 8^th grade classes online” video to learn the process. The video is on the middle school counselor page on the PCSD website as well as the students’ math & learning lab Google classrooms
Required classes will already be entered for students
Students will need to enter elective choices
Students taking an Honors course will need to add those courses

ONLINE REGISTRATION�

Students not completing online registration by 1/25/22 or any new students will need to complete a paper registration form.
Paper registration forms can be found on the PCSD webite and are available in the couselors’offices.
Counselors will meet with each 7^th grader individually after 1/25/22 to ensure the choices have been correctly entered.
