Earth’s Water - A Drop in the Bucket
Science 8 - Fresh and Salt Water Systems
How do we use water?
Take 2 minutes in your table groups to brainstorm a list of ways we use water on a daily basis.
How else might water be used in other ways?
Where do we get water?
Brainstorm natural sources of water:
- Oceans
- Groundwater
- Lakes
- Ice/Glaciers
- Wetlands
- Rivers/Streams
All the water in the world
1L represents all of the world’s water - but how much can we drink?
Oceans - 970 mL - 97%
Fresh Water - 30 mL - 3%
* Frozen - 21 mL - 2.1%
* Groundwater - 9 mL - 0.9%
* Surface (rivers, lakes, wetlands) - 0.5 mL
Daily Water Consumption
Here are a few statistics:
- Toilets use about 15-20 L per flush
- Faucets use about 12 L per minute
- Laundry uses about 230 L per load
- Showerheads use about 25 L per minute
Take a moment to consider how much water you consume in a day.
How much water do we use as a class in one day?
How can we save water?
Brainstorm some ideas about how you individually can reduce how much water consumption.
If each of us committed to reduce our water consumption by just 5 L per day what would happen?
