Dr. Chiu-Yin (Cathy) Wong

Dr. Chiu-Yin (Cathy) Wong is Professor of TESOL and Bilingual Education at Monmouth University. Before earning her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis on Second Language Education from Texas Tech University, she taught in Hong Kong, Korea, Hawaii, and Texas.

Her research focuses on teachers’ implementation of translanguaging pedagogy and how it supports student engagement in ESL and Chinese immersion contexts. She recently directed the federally funded STARTALK Chinese Language Program, promoting linguistic and cultural diversity through innovative learning experiences.

She received the Research Output Prize from the University of Hong Kong in 2023 and the Distinguished Teaching Award from Monmouth University in 2024.

Yu Zhang is a lecturer and Bilingual Coordinator (Asian Languages) at the Teacher Education Department at San Jose State University. She has received a PhD degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Florida International University. She has ten year’s college-level teaching experience in the US and China. She has taught courses in language development, second language acquisition theories, language assessment, as well as multicultural education in culturally and linguistically diverse settings. She also gained extremely valuable teaching and supervising experience for Mandarin/bilingual teacher candidates in field-based teacher preparation at various K-12 schools.

Mrs. Chung currently teaches 5 levels of high school Mandarin Chinese, from Chinese 1 to AP Language and Culture, to mostly non-native, non-heritage speakers. She serves as an advisor to the Chinese Cultural Club and National Chinese Honor Society on campus. Her teaching is enriched by her 9 years of experience in elementary Mandarin dual immersion 3rd and 4th grade classrooms, in both self-contained and team-teach settings . She was a home school mom for 5 years. She has a BA in Economics and received her Multiple-Subject credential with BCLAD , Single subject credentials in Chinese and Mathematics from CSULB. She also has a MA in Educational Leadership from Bradman University (now UMass Global). This year she serves as a treasurer in CLTA-SC board.
