Disabled worker affinity group

This is a group for anyone who works for UMD, from undergraduate employees to graduate assistants to faculty and staff. We are supported by Student Affairs which helps us order stickers/pins and have food and space for events. We have a Whatsapp space where anyone can ask questions and share frustrations and successes, and a resource list that is constantly being updated with information from ADS, the ADA coordinator, DOTS, etc. We are also closely linked to the Disability Cultural Center (DCC), the President’s Commission on Disability Issues (PCDI), and undergraduate groups like DICE, DAPi, and QWD. We have a shared calendar of events, with lots planned for Fall 2023! We also have a grad student subgroup that organizes outings, discusses sensitive matters, and shares art. Please join us!

  • The Disability Studies Minor promotes the study of disability and prepares students for an inclusively designed world.

  • Through required and elective courses, students will explore challenges and opportunities we face in making our world more accessible to all.

  • All undergraduate students regardless of major are invited to apply.
    • While the program is affiliated with special education faculty in the College of Education, the Minor does not prepare students to become special education teachers.

Study on creating research environments that are inclusive of autistic students

The Promoting Autism Inclusion and Representation (PAIR) project team is currently recruiting participants for a study focused on understanding the components of inclusive research environments for autistic student researchers. The information gained from this study will be used to create an effective, evidence-based training program for faculty/ lab staff to increase awareness of autism and autistic students’ needs and give concrete tips on how to promote acceptance of autism in one’s research lab.

Autistic students who have experience in a STEM research lab (e.g., as an undergraduate or graduate research assistant, for credit, paid, or volunteer) or would like to be involved in STEM research as an undergraduate research assistant are invited to participate in a focus group to share: your experience working in a research lab, general academic experiences, and/or barriers experienced in attaining entry to a STEM research lab. Participants must be a STEM major or are considering becoming a STEM major. Focus groups can be on Zoom or in person at the University of Maryland. Participation will include a 15-minute pre-survey and a focus group that will take about 75-90 minutes. You will receive a $50 gift card for your participation. Alternative formats to the focus group are available to those who would be more comfortable with a one-on- one format or some other alternative. Please contact us for more information.

Interested? Visit this webpage [https://umdsurvey.umd.edu/jfe/form/SV_8tOo54UZIrOqr1I] to learn more and complete the screening questionnaire.
