After school programs are fun and a great way to try new things! They can also help you develop social and emotional skills, boost confidence, and improve academic performance, while creating lasting memories and new friendships in a safe and structured environment.

Are you a parent or caregiver of a child in grades K-5? Looking for opportunities for your child to connect with peers? Then this slideshow is for you! Each slide is an after school (or weekend) program. These are options (virtual and in-person) in addition to the clubs offered at your school.

How does after school work for 6-8th graders?
In general, there are three types of programs available*:
All 6th-8th grade students are eligible to ride the bus to after school programs (e.g. youth center, community program, etc.) if located 1.5+ miles from their school. This is arranged through the school clerk and Transportation Change Form (available on CPS website).
Late buses: All Upper Schools and many elementary schools offer a late bus. They run from October-May (when CPS schools provide after school clubs and intramurals). The late buses depart from schools between 4:30-4:45pm, and operate primarily and often only on the days clubs/intramurals are being offered: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays -- and with seasonal breaks. Club at Upper School
Clubs at Upper Schools are usually run by school staff and coordinated by school admin. Because they don’t start until October of each year, the options at each school are not available until mid-Sept and are communicated through schools’ family liaison or principal (via email or school newsletter). they usually include some art, dance, student council, music or craft activities.

Cambridge Youth Programs runs 5 youth centers in Cambridge. CASP offers academic programming in a combination of homework help (the first hour of the program) and educational workshops (the second hour of the program). Workshops range from building model rockets and water balloon slingshots to growing bean plants and making weekly library trips. We also run a variety of field trips including recent trips to a bookstore, the aquarium, and movie nights on the Harvard campus.

Saturday Studios offers students in grades 3-12 the opportunity to explore their creativity. The program also supports the development of MassArt undergraduate and graduate students as art educators. Saturday Studios are taught by Art Education Student Teachers, who are supervised by Art Education faculty. Classes are open to all who are interested, from beginners to the emerging young artist. There are no prerequisites or portfolio reviews.

Teen Media: Youth in the Teen Media Program become creative technology users by participating in media foundations classes. Media foundations classes introduce youth to the digital arts and media literacy.
Teen Public Art: Youth enrolled in the Teen Public Art Program learn to solve complex problems working as a team to transform their community through public art. They do this using a variety of digital and traditional media.

The Cambridge Youth Boxing and Fitness Program is a collaboration between the Cambridge Police Department Family and Social Justice Section and the Cambridge YMCA.
