Why a foster is inadequate

This PowerPoint will go on to explain multiple problems with Bolling that cannot be fixed with a foster of the project, including:

  • Style problems
  • Terra Problems
  • Canonical problems

House Bolling in canon

  • The canton, with its reversal of the Baratheon colors beneath a bend sinister, indicates that the founder of the house was either a Baratheon bastard or a descendant of a Baratheon bastard.” – The Citadel
  • “House Bolling is a noble house of landed knights from the Stormlands, sworn to House Baratheon of Storm’s End” – A wiki of Ice and Fire

Known members of House Bolling

  • Ser Theodore Bolling – Executed by Maegor I Targaryen so he could force Lady Elinor Costayne to marry him.
  • Three unnamed sons of Theodore and Elinor
  • Ser Herbert Bolling – Killed by Ser Creighton Longbough at the battle of the Blackwater while fighting for Stannis. “Was m’lady familiar with Ser Herbert Bolling? You shall never meet him now. I slew him where he stood” – AFFC Brienne I

House Bolling by Boliiid

  • Unfortunately, when Boliiid left the community, he edited the original application to remove it, and that file no longer exists. It’s also difficult to tell how large Bol wanted the project to be, as only one hamlet was completed, and the main castle is still a WIP.
  • The style of Bolling’s houses and the village are strange and outdated. The obvious problems such as fence windows exist, but it faces deeper problems. 6 types of wood are used, as well as little to no stone. Overhangs on the sides of buildings also present a problem as the server has generally phased them out (using the kl redo to justify this). Bolling Village is also surrounded by 8 high log walls, which would block out a lot of sunlight and not rain. Some houses also use green wood to represent moss and rot growing on the side of houses. This appears strange to me as I rationalize you would’ve fixed the wall before allowing rot to grow all over it, making you more vulnerable to the Stormlands rain.

House Bolling by Boliiid

  • Further problems present themselves in response to newer builds such as Lonmouth in the same region which have incredibly different styles, using stone and slate instead of wood and thatch. Considering that Bolling is in the center of a huge forest it would make sense for Bolling to use mostly wood, however the overuse of logs and the lack of stone makes the style feel strange and outdated.
  • Several houses in and around Bolling are also made of entirely logs, which is unlike any other style on the server except for the oldest.

Terra Complications

  • The largest problems with Bolling’s terra is the village is located at the basin of several hills. With the large amount of rain in the Stormlands, the village is at actual risk of flooding. There are no ditches to drain water, or dirt mounds to prevent water reaching the walls. The entirely wood village would rot away extremely quickly.
  • The village has a sort of swamp moat which would rot the wooden walls even faster
  • Several yards are at a Y level 2 or 3 below that of the outside, these yards used for farming would flood and destroy the crops incredibly frequently.

9 of 29

Terra Complications

  • Similar swampy or rainy areas such as the Frey lands and Riverlands have houses on stilts or a layer of stone to prevent the moist ground from rotting the wooden houses. Bolling has no such equivalent.
  • Problems have been raised by Seri in that the village is based around a crossroads that don’t lead outside the village. Villages tend to grow around paths and roads (see the number of settlements along the Kingsroad that use it for trade or taxes).
  • The worst crime is a graveyard within the village. In a most environment like Bolling, the corpses would rot much faster and would float to the surface during harsh rain, as happens in some towns in America where skeletons were not buried in coffins.

Size of House Bolling

  • The current Bolling has only 1 Hamlet and 1 farm, with a castle and a tower along the road to lands of other lords. There are also several minis including a logging camp and a fishing hut.
  • I feel the house being this small breaks the canon of Theodore Bolling marrying Elinor Costayne. I don’t think a rich reach house next to Oldtown would marry their daughter to a poor, shitty landed knight house from the Rainwood with a single village.

11 of 29

Size of House Bolling

  • As a result of the contradiction between Costayne and Bolling, I present a solution
  • Increase the size of Bolling to 2-3 hamlets to make the lands slightly more populated, though neither hamlet having as many houses as the current village
  • 2-3 farms
  • More fishermen and another logging camp

12 of 29

Who did House Bolling declare for?

  • Like a lot of things in ASoIaF, it is unclear. Boliiid placed Joffrey banners outside the village, so it is clear he thought they would’ve remained loyal to the crown, however in AFFC, Ser Creighton Longbough claims to have slain Ser Herbert Bolling at the Battle of the Blackwater.
  • Whilst they could have claimed for any of the three Baratheons, I think it would be best for House Bolling to use the regular Baratheon banners to make it ambiguous who they sided with in the war of the 5 kings.

Resources: Food

  • Due to the dense forestation and semi-destroyed farm on the lands, it seems Boliiid intended for the main food source of Bolling to be hunting and fishing in the forest and numerous lakes, as well as produce from the single farm.
  • A problem rises however in the number of buildings on the land. There is the main Bolling keep, in addition to a tower along the road, a septry next to the farm and a logging camp, all of which will require food too.
  • To solve this problem, I would propose making more of the population hunters/butchers and adding more farms.

14 of 29

Resources: Food

  • Another thing that could be improved is the types of crops grown in the stormlands.
  • Currently: carrots, turnips, peas, wheat, berries and other unassorted herbs. This presents a problem as most of these crops would be easily and frequently destroyed by the harsh Stormlands weather.
  • More appropriate crops that could be grown are: rice, cabbage (which is already grown), eggplant, pumpkin, gourd and sweet potato.

15 of 29

Resources: Animals

According to https://sciencing.com/animals-temperate-rainforest-biome-6801694.html , the following animals can be found in temperate rainforests, the approximate biome of Cape Wrath

  • Insects and spiders
  • Frogs and toads
  • Voles, squirrels, mice and chipmunks
  • Owls, hawks and eagles
  • Deer and Elk
  • Black bears and mountain lions

16 of 29

Resources: Animals

  • Frogs, birds, fish and small mammals can provide an adequate food source for the village
  • Deer and Elk provide a large food source and fur
  • Bears are a direct threat to the villagers of Bolling, but can also provide meat and fur when killed.

17 of 29

Resources: Building materials

  • The Rainwood is filled with natural resources, including stone from boulders and wood from the forest.
  • The reason why I may use a lot of stone in the construction of Bolling is the moist ground would rot away the wood quickly, as is represented in the current Bolling with green wood.
  • This may be better represented in a new Bolling using moss rather than green wood

18 of 29

Society and Culture

  • The current society of Bolling is squashed together in a huge, single village behind a 6 block high, spiked wall. Considering that this wall would rot away over time and would need to be rebuilt semi-frequently.
  • Considering that Dorne is not a threat to Cape Wrath at this time, there can only be two reasons for this. The first being wildlife, such as the bears that inhabit the Rainwood, or other Stormlands houses attacking them for siding with Joffrey (if indeed they did).

19 of 29

Society and Culture

  • If I were to be allowed to redo Bolling, I would split the Village into two or more hamlets, and remove the huge wall.
  • A dirt mount around the village already described would be enough to keep wild animals from wandering into the village.

20 of 29

Economy

  • Bolling seems to make the majority of its income from exporting wood, as evidenced with the logging camp. I would like to expand this by making another logging camp, perhaps to export wood to the plains to the south of Cape Wrath.
  • More carts along roads could also help accentuate this
  • It should be noted that Bolling and the other houses of Cape Wrath are part of the few that has the ability to sell chopped weirwood, used as an exotic building material in rich castles such as Whitewalls.
  • Bolling also makes money from taxing carts along the road

Plans

Purple circles – Main projects

  1. Bolling Keep – To be redone as I don’t believe it fits the area, explained previously
  2. Hamlet 1 – Style to be change and population reduced slightly, plotting to be changed to be more center around the main road
  3. Farm 1 – Fields made slightly larger and terra to accommodate
  4. Hamlet 2 – I believe this is a much better place for a hamlet than 5, just look at the roads needed
  5. Farm 2
  6. A pigpen on the road between Hamlet 1 and Farm 1, I believe this is in a terrible place and should be moved closer to farm 1

Inspiration for a new Bolling

26 of 29

Inspiration for a new Keep

The same castle used by Boliiid is used as inspiration for the Bolling keep. Considering the two keeps look similar despite being on opposite sides of the region. I would suggest other Deutsch castles be used, such as:

  • Callenberg
  • Heldburg
  • Lahneck
  • Nassau
  • Burg Vichtenstein (Austrian)
