Introduction:

  • A preposition is a word or group of words used before a noun, pronoun, or noun phrase to show direction, time, place, location, spatial relationships, or to introduce an object.

  • He reads in the evening.
  • Alia drove to the store.
  • Asim lives in the Lahore.
  • The kids are hiding behind the tree.

Prepositions of Direction

  • Prepositions of direction indicate the location/direction of a noun (a person, place, or thing) in relation to another noun.

Examples:

  • John traveled toward Lahore.
  • The cat jumped onto the table.
  • Ali jumped into the water.

Some common prepositions of Direction:

up,down, in, out, left, right,into,onto,toward, forward, backward, or sideways.

Can express movement in the direction of a physical place.

  • Ali Hamza ran to college because he was late.
  • Toward

Toward indicates movement in the direction of a general area rather than a specific destination.

  • Abdullah traveled to Multan.

  • Onto

Onto (on + to) is used to express movement toward a open space.

  • The cat jumped onto the table.
  • Into

Into (in + to) indicates movement toward the inside of an object, space, or volume

  • Ayesha jumped into the water.

  • Onto and Into are also known as “Prepositions of Spatial Relationship”

  • Other Name is “Prepositions of Movement”

  • A preposition of time can express when something happens at one point in time or when something happens over an extended period of time.

Expresses an action or state that was started and is still happening.

Expresses the duration of an action or event.

  • Hamza was sick for a week.

Expresses the beginning and end of a period of time.

  • My office hours are from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m

Expresses a period of time over which an action occurs.

  • Owls sleep during the day.
  • Within

Used to show something will take place before a certain time.

  • Fahad will be there within 30 minutes .
