Finance Information

  • We will not be sending out finance information or invoices through Hero

  • We run all of our finance comms through our School Shop, and we cannot put all of this onto Hero. It makes sense to keep it all in one place, so we will keep using the School Shop for invoices, payments, and orders

  • You can follow the link from your account in Hero to the School Shop

How can we use Hero at home?

  • It can be used for home learning or distance learning

  • Access student goals, so they can work on them at home

  • Any goals that have information boxes next them (question mark icon) have links to learning presentations and practice activities. We will keep working to increase the information boxes

  • Students can work on their learning tasks at home and upload to their goals, like they do at school

  • Students can make learning posts for their Journey of Growth and Development goals

Things to be mindful of

  • This is new for all teachers, and we are currently working out how we use it to communicate and support learning
  • May be differences between hubs and teachers as we do this
  • May be overload of information or posts
  • Bear with us! Tell us if there are issues, so we can work through them

Practical help

  • Any questions?

  • Teachers in the session are now available for you to show them how Hero works, or to help you to sign up for Hero

Reading programmes - Make it interactive

At the early reading levels children learn to say a word for each word they see (1-1 matching), recognise high frequency words, develop the skills to work out tricky words, read with fluency and expression, notice and fix mistakes and to read for meaning (comprehension). As children progress, they continue to develop these skills and to build a deeper understanding of the text (e.g. critical thinking, sequencing, summarising).

How you can help at home:

  • Play my pile your pile game
  • ABC chart - letter sounds and blends
  • Listen to their reading book or alternate reading pages
  • Read to your child
  • Ask questions / retell the story
  • Prompt and praise rather than tell
  • Sunshine classics
  • Read street/supermarket signs
  • Encourage: stretching words out and fluency

writing programmes - Make it interactive

At the early writing levels children learn that pictures

have a message. The message is written with sounds (ABC) and

those sounds make up words.

How you can help at home:

  • Develop their fine motor skills (muscles in their fingers):

cutting, tearing bits of paper, threading

  • Let them draw a picture and ask them lots of questions to

promote interesting language that they may use later on.

  • Encourage them to get their mouth ready and say/stretch

out the sounds they want to write.

  • They could write the supermarket list; write a letter or email

to a family member or someone they know.

Maths Programmes - Make it interactive

The main focus in maths is to get a good foundation of number knowledge, how numbers work, seeing patterns and learning place value. Our learners are also learning basic facts - addition and subtraction to 5, to 10, doubles to 10.

How you can help at home:

  • Board games with throwing / adding dice numbers
  • Counting
  • Counting backwards following the numbers on the microwave
  • Reading numbers in the supermarket and on number plates
  • Talking about how it all works - e.g. fractions in real life
  • Basic facts home learning as needed
  • Matific/IXL
  • Tizmos
