The Old Testament teaches me about Jesus Christ, the promised Messiah

SCRIPTURE

53 And the Lord said: Blessed is he through whose seed Messiah shall come; for he saith—I am Messiah, the King of Zion, the Rock of Heaven, which is broad as eternity; whoso cometh in at the gate and climbeth up by me shall never fall; wherefore, blessed are they of whom I have spoken, for they shall come forth with songs of everlasting joy.

Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

The Old Testament teaches me about Jesus Christ, the promised Messiah

S. Dilworth Young

Former Member of the Seventy

[I]f this man who did such mighty works was truly the Messiah promised for nearly 2,000 years, he must fulfill all the prophecies which have been inspired of the Holy Ghost concerning him. There are numerous such prophecies in the Old Testament… He was to be born of a virgin; he was to be named Immanuel, which means “God with us.” He was to come out of Egypt, and yet be born in Bethlehem of Judea. His enemies would cause great mourning for children in Bethlehem… He was to do many marvelous acts which their recipients were not to make known in the streets. He would cast out devils and heal the sick. He was to teach in parables…

[T]he Savior of mankind had fulfilled to the minutest detail those events foretold by the prophets… All of these prophecies, great and small, bear witness that the Lord has known the end from the beginning...

Sleep, Little Jesus(Children's Songbook #47)

MUSIC

1. Sleep, little Jesus, Lord of the earth.

Angels are telling the news of thy birth.

Shepherds will come to thee, bringing thee love.

Bright shines the star in heaven above.

2. “Sleep, little Jesus,” softly we sing.

Earth long has waited her Savior and King.

Heavenly hosts sing, “Alleluia,

Peace to all men, Alleluia!”

Symbols can help us remember Jesus Christ

SCRIPTURE

3 Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house:

5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats:

11 And thus shall ye eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the LORD’s passover.

14 And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the LORD throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever.

Numbers 21:8 And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.

9 And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.

- Exodus 12:3, 5, 11, 14; Numbers 21:8-9

Symbols can help us remember Jesus Christ

Dieter F. Uchtdorf

Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

What a wonderful, joyous time of the year! Christmas is about Christ. Of course, we do not need a Christmas holiday or Christmas traditions to remember Jesus Christ, our Savior. But the celebrations of Christmas can help remind us of Him. It is usually something small—we read a verse of scripture; we hear a sacred carol and really listen to its words; or we watch people doing sincere acts of love.

Christmas reminds us that we, like the Wise Men of old, should seek Christ and lay before Him the most precious of gifts. We should offer Him our love. We should promise to remember Him always, to emulate His example, and to go about doing good.

Stars Were Gleaming(Children's Songbook #37)

MUSIC

1. Stars were gleaming, shepherds dreaming;

And the night was dark and chill.

Angels’ story rang with glory;

Shepherds heard it on the hill.

Ah, that singing! Hear it ringing,

Earthward winging, Christmas bringing!

Hearken! We can hear it still!

2. See the clearness and the nearness

Of the blessed Christmas star,

Leading, guiding; wise men riding

Through the desert dark and far.

Lovely showing, shining, growing,

Onward going, gleaming, glowing,

Leading still, our Christmas star!

We rejoice in our Redeemer

SCRIPTURE

1 And in that day thou shalt say, O LORD, I will praise thee: though thou wast angry with me, thine anger is turned away, and thou comfortedst me.

2 Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation.

3 Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation.

4 And in that day shall ye say, Praise the LORD, call upon his name, declare his doings among the people, make mention that his name is exalted.

5 Sing unto the LORD; for he hath done excellent things: this is known in all the earth.

6 Cry out and shout, thou inhabitant of Zion: for great is the Holy One of Israel in the midst of thee.

- Isaiah 12:1-6

We rejoice in our Redeemer

Russell M. Nelson

President of the Church

2018 - Current

The Redeemer is the ultimate and only source of enduring and eternal joy…Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, repentance, obedience, service, and a gospel perspective about the trials we encounter in mortality all invite us to come unto the source of enduring joy—Jesus Christ. I invite you to identify, study, and prayerfully ponder additional principles that enable us to receive this important spiritual gift of joy…

Enduring joy is not a blessing reserved for a select few. Rather, every member of the Lord’s restored Church who is striving to remember and honor sacred covenants and keep the commandments can receive this gift, according to God’s will and timing. In this Christmas season, may each of us strive to appreciate more fully the supernal gift of joy. As we do so, may we begin to see with new eyes and hear with new ears as “Saints and angels sing,” as we “repeat the sounding joy,” and as we “ever worship God.”

“We Have Waited for Him, and He Will Save Us”

SCRIPTURE

8 He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the LORD hath spoken it.

9 And it shall be said in that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, and he will save us: this is the LORD; we have waited for him, we will be glad and rejoice in his salvation.

Hosea 13:14 I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death: O death, I will be thy plagues; O grave, I will be thy destruction: repentance shall be hid from mine eyes.

“We Have Waited for Him, and He Will Save Us”

Dale G. Renlund

Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

My father was a quiet man, a man of few words in both his mother tongue and the English he learned as an adult…On Christmas Eve he read from Luke 2…he bore his testimony…in heavily accented English, “I may not be able to hold that little baby Jesus in my arms, but I know…that that baby was the Son of God, my Savior and Redeemer. He is real, and He lives.” After this declaration, he looked at each of us with his piercing blue eyes and said with an emphatic nod, “And you can know it too.”

…The Book of Mormon prophet Amaleki pleaded with the people, saying, “And now…I would that ye should come unto Christ, who is the Holy One of Israel, and partake of his salvation, and the power of his redemption. Yea, come unto him, and offer your whole souls as an offering unto him… ; and as the Lord liveth ye will be saved.” This Christmas, ask your Heavenly Father for the spiritual gift of knowing of the living reality of the Savior of the world…

The Nativity Song(Children’s Songbook #52)

MUSIC

1. This is the season beloved of the year.

Sing a rhyme; Christmastime soon will be here.

Tell the true story of Jesus’ birth,

When, as a baby, he came to the earth.

2. This is the new star, shining so bright,

Lighting the world on that first Christmas night.

This is the angel proclaiming the birth,

Singing “Hosanna!” and “Peace on the earth!”

3. This is the stable, shelter so bare;

Cattle and oxen first welcomed him there.

This is the manger, sweet hay for a bed,

Waiting for Jesus to cradle his head.

4. These are the shepherds, humble and mild,

Hast’ning to worship the heavenly child.

These are the wise men who followed the star,

Frankincense, gold, and myrrh brought from afar.

5. See the sweet mother, Mary so fair,

Joseph, who guided the donkey with care.

See the dear baby of Bethlehem,

Little Lord Jesus, the Savior of men

“His name shall be called Wonderful.”

25 of 41

“His name shall be called Wonderful.”

SCRIPTURE

6 …and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Psalm 83:18 That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth.

- Isaiah 9:6; Psalm 83:18

“His name shall be called Wonderful.”

Dieter F. Uchtdorf

Former Member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

We can’t fully understand the meaning of Christmas unless we understand the meaning of the Savior’s life, Atonement, and Resurrection…When the Savior was 12, He taught in the temple. He explained to His anxious parents that He was about His Father’s business. That business was accomplished as He went forward fulfilling His earthly mission. The Savior describes the culmination of that mission in these stirring words:“…And as many as have received me, to them have I given to become the sons [and daughters] of God; and even so will I to as many as shall believe on my name, for behold, by me redemption cometh, and in me is the law of Moses fulfilled”…

Each week as we participate in the ordinance of the sacrament, we renew the promise of the Savior’s birth in our own lives. We take His name upon us, and we renew our covenant of obedience and our promise that we will always remember Him. May we take time this Christmas season to renew our covenants to follow the Savior and to do His will, just as He did the will of our Heavenly Father. - Elder Robert D. Hales, “The Promise of Christmas,” December 2013 Ensign

He Sent His Son(Children’s Songbook #34)

MUSIC

How could the Father tell the world of love and tenderness?

He sent his Son, a newborn babe, with peace and holiness.

How could the Father show the world the pathway we should go?

He sent his Son to walk with men on earth, that we may know.

How could the Father tell the world of sacrifice, of death?

He sent his Son to die for us and rise with living breath.

What does the Father ask of us? What do the scriptures say?

Have faith, have hope, live like his Son, help others on their way.

What does he ask? Live like his Son.

God gave us the gift of His Son

SCRIPTURE

6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder…

7 Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.

God gave us the gift of His Son

Russell M. Nelson

President of the Church

2018 - Present

Even as we sing “Silent Night,” we know the life of that Babe of Bethlehem did not begin there, nor did it end on Calvary. In a premortal realm, Jesus was anointed by His Father to be the Messiah, the Christ, the Savior and Redeemer of all humankind. He was foreordained to atone for us. “He was wounded for our transgressions [and] bruised for our iniquities”. He came to make immortality a reality and eternal life a possibility for all who would ever live… there is nothing more important we can do this Christmas than to rivet our focus on the Savior and on the gift of what His life really means to each of us.

Our loving Heavenly Father “so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” The Son of God then promised us that “whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die.” What unspeakable, incomparable gifts from the Father and the Son! I thank God for the gift of His Beloved Son. And I thank our Lord Jesus Christ for His incomparable sacrifice and mission.

O Little Town of Bethlehem(Hymn Book #208)

MUSIC

1. O little town of Bethlehem,

How still we see thee lie.

Above thy deep and dreamless sleep

The silent stars go by;

Yet in thy dark streets shineth

The everlasting Light.

The hopes and fears of all the years

Are met in thee tonight.

2. For Christ is born of Mary,

And, gathered all above

While mortals sleep, the angels keep

Their watch of wond’ring love.

O morning stars, together

Proclaim the holy birth,

And praises sing to God the King,

And peace to men on earth.

3. How silently, how silently

The wondrous gift is giv’n!

So God imparts to human hearts

The blessings of his heav’n.

No ear may hear his coming;

But in this world of sin,

Where meek souls will receive him, still

The dear Christ enters in.

Jesus Christ was born to be my Savior –Reading of Luke 2

SCRIPTURE

4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)

5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

6 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

SCRIPTURE

13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

15 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.

16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.

Jesus Christ was born to be my Savior

Russell M. Nelson

President of the Church

      2018 - Present

Jehovah condescended to come to earth as the baby Jesus. He was born of an immortal Father and a mortal mother. He was born in Bethlehem under the most humble of circumstances. His was the holy birth foreseen by prophets since the days of Adam. Jesus Christ is God’s transcendent gift—the gift of the Father to all of His children (see John 3:16). That birth we joyfully celebrate each Christmas season.
