First Triple Combo Therapy Approved for Cystic Fibrosis in Adults, Adolescents with F508del Mutation

This week for the topic of the week, the very first Triple Combo Therapy was recently approved just last Monday for the treatment of cystic fibrosis.

So for some background information, Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic disorder that gradually limits your ability to breathe as you age. The main cause for Cystic Fibrosis is the deletion of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene. So when you have Cystic Fibrosis, the functionality of the CFTR proteins becomes dysfunctional.

With that in mind, let’s talk about our 3 drugs. The drug combo of elexacaftor, ivacaftor, and tezacaftor targets the CFTR gene and aids in the production of viable CFTR proteins for people of the ages 12 and older.

As a result, patients who take this drug cocktail have shown improvement in their breathing and body mass index.

As with any other drug, there are adverse side effects when It comes to using these drugs, some of which include, rashes, the flu-like symptoms, haeadaches, diarrhea.

BUT, the approval of this drug combo by the FDA is momentous, because it is starting a trend where drug combinations and therapies like this drug cocktail are being fast tracked into approval to help accelerate the development for new treatments in complex diseases, while at the same time, the FDA maintains their high standards of careful surveillance as this new treatment is being released to the affected population.

Hey y’all, my name is Ethan Chhan! I’m a second year Pharmaceutical Sciences Major and I’m from a small town outside of Fresno called Hanford. Outside of PPS, I enjoy writing, photography, and going to the gym when I’m not stressing over homework.
