Reading Analysis: Due June 6

Draw on 2 or 3 of the following readings (Yoon - week 1; Martinez - week 6; Paris - week 9) to write an analysis on the role of the qualitative researcher in relation to their research participants.

Recap: Irene Yoon, “Hauntings of a Korean American Researcher…

Her article focuses on:

Documenting her experiences as a Korean American woman of color studying white-dominated professional spaces in diverse K-12 schools.

“I began wondering how my being a Korean American woman – with interests in critically interrogating race, class, and gender – played a part in my ethnographic fieldwork” (p. 450)

Associate Professor, University of Utah

Recap of Some Key Points by Yoon

Yoon unpacks a set of vignettes based on her experiences gathering data in schools, each of which is framed by something that was said to her or in her presence.

Yoon explains that how people read researchers’ identities is important.

Recap: Danny Martinez, “This ain’t the projects: A researcher’s reflection on the local appropriateness of our research tools”

  • Martinez reflects on his positionality and his research tools in relation to the Black and Latina/o youth in his study

  • He conducted a year-long ethnographic study of youth communication in 4 English language arts high school classrooms

  • The school he studied was in the community he grew up in, and he was formerly a teacher there.

Professor, UC Davis

Recap of some key points by Martinez

Students asked who he was, why he was there, and had

questions about his research tools.

Martinez explains that his “[r]esearch tools indexed

systems of surveillance experienced by the youth” (p. 61).

Whereas some students resisted his research tools, others saw them as a vehicle for helping others understand their experiences.

Introduction to Django Paris’ article, “A friend who understands fully…"

  • Paris reflects on his interactions with youth in a study of the linguistic and cultural world of a multiethnic youth community.
  • He explains that sharing about himself led the youth to share more authentically about their own selves.
  • One of the participants texted Paris after the study was over and described him as “a friend who understands fully” and as someone “who has been through it.” This participant also explained that being part of the research process inspired him to keep striving in spite of obstacles.

Paris – Humanizing research

We can be friends with our participants. We can, in small ways, come to understand. We can inspire them as they inspire us. We can humanize through the act of research” (p. 147).

Reflection question:

What common topics about the role of the researcher do the articles address?

Activity

  • Complete the class activity posted on Canvas to help you prepare for the reading analysis.
    • What stood out to you about the Paris article?
    • What did you learn about the role of the qualitative researcher in relation to their participants in the three articles we read?
    • Based on what you learned, what will you apply in your own research (should you choose to do research in the future)?
