  1. Celebrate our progress in home reading and literacy activities.

2. To learn how to build on curriculum themes to develop reading schema and vocabulary at home.

3. To preview and plan our Family Accountability Walk + sharing Reading Data and Report Cards with Hoover families.

4. Combine our Story of Self, Us, and Now into a powerful Call to Action.

6 of 38

  1. Timed reading for “Fluency” involves reading with speed, accuracy, and expression.

  • A second grader’s fluency goal is to read 30-40 words per minute.

  • If there is a lot of Green and orange on your child’s report card, it means they are performing below grade level. When we see blue and red it means at or above grade level.

  • As Hoover parents we can work together to teach more parents to understand their children’s reading data and strategies to help them get to grade level.

Our Call to Action

Esra Alaji

Hoover Parent Leader

Good morning everyone, my name is Esra Alaji. I would like to share my story when I come to America. When I first time came to America, I even never had spoken English before. So, English was a big challenge for me and my family. In Yemen we did not learn English until seventh grade. In seventh grade we start learning about the alphabet numbers colours and small words. My father told us that we have to go to school to learn the language. So,he took us to the district but, all schools are full the only space was in Oakland technical high school. My dad accepted and they put us in Oakland technical high school. It was for all Americans and it was for the native language people. It was the hardest six months for me and my sister. I started tell my mom that I can’t continue going to school if they forced me to go to school I will do something to myself because of the language. After six month, my dad went back to Oakland District and told them we can’t continue at the school because it’s not our level they need to switch us to school where they can start with us from the beginning. They transfer us to Oakland International high school it was for all students whose English is the second language. we start to learn and we feel we are in the right spot on our level they give us extra work extra teachers so we can improve our language and we continue from that and we graduate from Oakland International high school with 4 GPA.

Finally after learning how hard was the language at the beginning I will continue to do the same thing with my daughter Keeps her in school every single day let her study read do her work each day because I don’t want her to be at the same situation, I was when I come to America. Thank u
