2-PS1-1.
Plan and conduct an investigation to describe and classify different kinds of materials by their observable properties.
Math
2.MD.D.10 Draw a picture graph and a bar graph (with single-unit scale) to represent a data set with up to four categories. Solve simple put-together, take-apart, and compare problems using information presented in the graph. See Table 1.
Science
2.P1U1.1 Plan and carry out an investigation to determine that matter has mass, takes up space, and is recognized by its observable properties; use the collected evidence to develop and support an explanation.
Objective:
Students will be able to differentiate between the 3 types of matter and make a graph to show the different types of matter found on a matter scavenger hunt.
Agenda (60 mins + more time if needed)
Ask before questions
Watch video
Ask questions
Have students go on scavenger hunt
After scavenger hunt have students make graph
Have students take quiz
Agenda
After video and questions have students go on a matter scavenger hunt.
Have students write down their findings using the attached sheet…
States of Matter Scavenger Hunt
Once completed with the scavenger hunt have students make a graph of their findings.
Quiz
Intro/Driving Question/Opening
How can you define matter?
What is matter?
Hands-on Activity Instructions
After Video:
Ask students questions…..
What state of matter is slime?
How do you know a pencil is a solid?
What state of matter is playdough?
Why is broccoli considered a solid?
If I put juice in the freezer is it still juice or a different form of matter?
Hands on Activity Instructions
Have students go on scavenger hunt in classroom and around school.
Have students write down their findings using the attached sheet…
Have students make the data they have collected into a chart or a graph using Google Sheets
Once this is completed have students have a classroom discussion about their findings, students may present their findings to the class.
Once this is completed have students take the attached assessment. (Next slide)
Assessment
Differentiation
Struggling students may be put into groups with students that can help them fill out their sheets.
When making the graph, students may receive additional support from other students or from a teacher or aid.
Remediation
Extension/Enrichment
Sorting activity:
Teachers may gather different types of materials and have students sort them into the correct matter form and explain why the material should be categorized into that form.
