Notes for teachers

  • This lesson takes place in the classroom.
  • Students may be put into small groups.
  • Students will conduct a scavenger hunt in the classroom or in the school building.
  • Provide students with graph paper or teach students how to make a graph in Google (sheets).

List of Materials

  • Different forms of matter…be creative
  • Data collection sheets
  • Computers (or you will need to print the google forms)

Standards

NGSS

2-PS1-1.

Plan and conduct an investigation to describe and classify different kinds of materials by their observable properties.

Math

2.MD.D.10 Draw a picture graph and a bar graph (with single-unit scale) to represent a data set with up to four categories. Solve simple put-together, take-apart, and compare problems using information presented in the graph. See Table 1.

Science

2.P1U1.1 Plan and carry out an investigation to determine that matter has mass, takes up space, and is recognized by its observable properties; use the collected evidence to develop and support an explanation.

Objective:

Students will be able to differentiate between the 3 types of matter and make a graph to show the different types of matter found on a matter scavenger hunt.

Have students go on scavenger hunt in classroom and around school.

Have students make the data they have collected into a chart or a graph using Google Sheets

Once this is completed have students have a classroom discussion about their findings, students may present their findings to the class.

Once this is completed have students take the attached assessment. (Next slide)

Differentiation

Struggling students may be put into groups with students that can help them fill out their sheets.

When making the graph, students may receive additional support from other students or from a teacher or aid.

Extension/Enrichment

Sorting activity:

Teachers may gather different types of materials and have students sort them into the correct matter form and explain why the material should be categorized into that form.
