Principal’s Message

Dear Hoover Community,

The first part of the 2022-2023 year has gone by quickly, and it has been both a busy and exciting time for us with the opening of the school year -- welcoming all students back in person, engaging in first quarter activities, and culminating with parent teas, PTA meetings, and our annual Halloween party, hosted by PTA. We are looking forward to second quarter and the exciting opportunities it brings. We hope families make their way out for Outdoor Family Portrait Day on November 7th, a fundraiser to support our wellness programs for staff and students. As we reflect on the many things for which we are thankful, I want to take this opportunity to share just a few of them with you: we are thankful for our students who show up and are ready to learn each and every day– they give us all a daily reminder of what is important and why we are here. We are thankful for the support of the parents in creating an outstanding partnership for our students. We are thankful for the teachers and staff members who really care about student achievement; our staff have gone above and beyond in ensuring that students are learning and supported each and every day. We are truly blessed.

We wish all of you and your families a happy, healthy and relaxing Thanksgiving holiday!

Be safe and be well.

Dr. Yong-Mi Kim, Principal

Culture of Respect Lesson

Montgomery County Public Schools is committed to ensuring our students are equipped with the information needed to be able to recognize signs of bullying/cyber bullying, harassment (including sexual harassment), hate-bias incidents, hazing, intimidation, and student gender norms. An online student training lesson, entitled “Culture of Respect,” has been developed for students in grades 6 through 12. This online training lesson builds on last year’s student module and provides critical information that will help students better recognize the signs of inappropriate behaviors, including the various ways to report alleged/concerning incidents. The training includes a student survey that will provide school leaders with valuable data to assess the current culture and climate of respect at their schools and determine potential next steps to plan for improvements. Students will earn two SSL hours to complete the training.

The objectives of the training module are for students to know and be able to:

  • Review collective responsibilities in promoting a positive school culture and ensuring the physical, social, and emotional safety for all students in alignment with the MCPS Be Well 365 initiative.
  • Define bullying, cyberbullying, harassment (including sexual harassment), hate-bias, hazing, intimidation, and student gender norms.
  • Recognize signs of hazing, bullying, and harassment, including sexual harassment/assault.
  • Identify reporting procedures to inform school administration of potential concerns and incidents.
  • Analyze different scenarios and discuss possible consequences per the MCPS Student Code of Conduct.
  • Complete a feedback questionnaire, including an activity to help school administration gauge the level of concern in each of the areas addressed in the training module.

The training should take approximately 30 minutes to complete and will be accessible to all students via their myMCPS Classroom homepage beginning October 20, 2022. Students are asked to complete the training by December 22, 2022. Students will complete the lesson during Connect Time!

Hoover Emergency Plan Overview

EMERGENCY DRILLS

Montgomery County Public Schools is committed to providing a safe and welcoming learning environment for our students and staff. Every year, each MCPS school conducts a number of emergency drills to ensure students and staff are prepared in the case of an emergency.

TYPES OF DRILLS

The State of Maryland requires six annual mandated drills

  • Lockdown
  • Shelter-in-place
  • Evacuation
  • Reverse evacuation
  • Severe weather
  • Drop, cover, and hold (earthquake)

20 of 85

Carpool Loops, AM Drop Off, and PM Pick Up

REMINDERS

  • Plan ahead for traffic. Please allow sufficient time for drop off so students enter the building prior to 8:00. Classes start promptly at 8:15 and students need time to go to their lockers and pick up chromebooks.
  • Doors open at 7:45. Please do not drop off students prior.
  • All students crossing Tuckerman and/or Postoak Road should do so only at the crosswalk that is attended by a county crossing guard.
  • Families should not use St. Andrews entrance to U turn instead turn left on Bunnell or Victory Lane.
  • Families should not drop off or pick up students in the side lot off Tuckerman Lane.

21 of 85

Hoover Emergency Plan Overview

The purpose of our planning and practicing for emergency situations is to ensure a safe resolution of an emergency situation and promote situational awareness. Situational awareness refers to:

  • Being mindful of your surroundings and the overall environment.
  • Being mindful of others around you and anything that might seem out of place.
  • Assessing actions, activities, and occurrences that might affect you.
  • Empowering yourself and others to “be aware” and “stay aware”.

When you become more aware, you are better able to identify, assess, report, and avoid threats to you and everyone around you.

22 of 85

Overview of Safety Drills

  • A fire drill or fire evacuation occurs when there is a fire or life safety emergency, the fire alarm is activated, or you are notified by emergency personnel to evacuate the building.
  • A directed evacuation may occur for a bomb threat, a suspicious package, or an inside hazardous material release. Students and staff are directed away from the known danger area and do NOT assemble all in one location.
  • A reverse evacuation can occur when a dangerous situation outside requires students and staff to be directed back into the building. Some examples of these dangerous situations include severe weather, police activity in the area, or a dangerous person on the playground.
  • A severe weather shelter can occur when a severe thunderstorm or tornado warning is activated.
  • A shelter-in-place can occur when there is a danger in the neighborhood or near school property, or the need for heightened awareness of what is going on in the area around the school. The exterior doors to the school building will be locked and monitored to ensure the threat does not come onto the school property. A shelter-in-place is also a response to a biological, chemical, or radiological incident.

23 of 85

Overview of Safety Drills

  • A drop-cover-hold shelter is for any earthquake activity in or outside of the school building.
  • A lockdown occurs when there is life-threatening imminent danger. If the extent or severity of the danger, threat, or location is unknown, a principal or administrator may elect to activate a school-wide lockdown for the safety of all. A lockdown with options (Avoid, Deny, or Defend) may occur depending on the location and seriousness of an active assailant threat. The Principal/Administrator has the authority to issue a school-wide lockdown and can override Avoid, Deny, Defend procedures when it would be safer to lockdown.

Additionally, schools have a Parent-Child Reunification (PCR) Process for reuniting children with their parents/guardians in the event of an emergency or crisis at a designated location (indoor or outdoor, on-campus or off-campus).

MCPS Safety Video Featuring Hoover

Last week, MCPS Superintendent Dr.Monifa B. McKnight sent a message to the MCPS community to provide an update on our school district’s safety and security protocols, and our ongoing efforts to communicate about emergency situations. As part of procedural updates and to provide consistency across the district, the MCPS Department of Systemwide Safety and Emergency Management (DSSEM) is working with MCPS-TV to build video footage of safety drills. This footage will be used for the purpose of training staff and secondary students. Hoover has been invited to participate in these safety videos by staging and demonstrating a lockdown drill.

During the week of November 13, a DSSEM supervisor and staff from MCPS-TV will work with Hoover Admin, security, and one of our PE classes/teachers, to model the idea of “situational awareness” in response to a lockdown situation. The video will demonstrate what to do when students are outside the building during the announcement of a lockdown drill. Parents/Guardians of students participating in the video will receive additional information prior to the date of the recording.

We appreciate the opportunity to support the school district’s safety and security initiative. As always, we are committed to providing a safe and welcoming learning environment for our students and staff.

Procedural Update: Connect Ed Messages

In the event we need to secure the building, it is important to keep our students safe without interference yet, ensure the community is informed. When we need to initiate a lockdown or shelter in place, we will be immediately sending the following messages. Upon receiving the messages, we will not be able to allow students/visitors to enter or exit the building. Additionally, we will be unable to share information with individuals through phone calls as we will be “all hands on deck” responding to the situation.

Lockdown: Attention Hoover Community, we are currently experiencing an emergency situation and are in lockdown. Our entrance and exit doors are locked and can not be accessed for incoming or outgoing students/visitors. Please do not call the school as we are unable to answer phone calls at this time. We will update you as soon as more information becomes available.

Lockdown Text: Attention Hoover Community, we are currently in lockdown. Do not call the school. We will update you as more information becomes available.

Our entrance and exit doors are locked and can not be accessed for incoming or outgoing students/visitors. Please do not call the school as we are unable to answer phone calls at this time. We will update you as soon as more information becomes available.

Virtual Family Nights: Grief Support for the Whole Family

Please join us for Virtual Family Nights on Zoom! Our Family Nights, offered free of charge, bring grieving families together ahead of holidays and other special days to encourage sharing and communication between adults and children.

CaringMatters’ Family Nights workshops help grieving families learn coping tools, plan for handling celebrations and honor their loved one(s). Art activities, facilitated by trained volunteers, provide families with an opportunity to create something together as a way to explore their feelings, remember their loved ones and keep their memories alive.

For virtual Family Nights, families will need a space where they can work on a project together, as well as a device, preferably a tablet or computer, to access Zoom. CaringMatters will deliver all art materials a few days prior to the online workshop.

Each workshop is designed to be independent of the others so that families can come to one or more as they choose. Appropriate for families with children ages 5-18. Registration is required.

Hoover PTA

Dear Hoover Community,

I want to thank the parent members and faculty members who have joined the PTA to date. As you know, the PTA’s mission is to make every child's potential a reality by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for all children. Your support makes this possible. If you have not already purchased a PTA membership, you may do so here.

In addition to purchasing a membership, I hope that you will be an active partner with the PTA in other ways: participating in PTA fundraising events, volunteering in the Media Center and for grade specific activities, and attending the general PTA membership meetings. These opportunities, and other important news and events, are in Hoover Notes, the PTA’s weekly email, and posted on the PTA’s website.

We’ve also created an Amazon Classroom Wishlist to further support Hoover’s wonderful teachers. Thank you to those of you who have contributed over $2,000 worth of items that have gone directly into the classrooms. Additional teacher requests are added regularly, so if you would like to still contribute there are plenty of items available.

Hoover PTA (continued)

Our November fundraiser is the purchase of Holiday Pies with Sprinkles Potomac. This women-owned small business has been serving Potomac for over 30 years and its manager is a Hoover graduate. If you want to support Hoover, but don't want the pie, you can purchase one for our wonderful Hoover staff to enjoy over Thanksgiving break. Enter "Hoover" in the comment box if you plan to keep the pie. Enter "Hoover Teacher" if you want the PTA to get the pie to a Hoover staff member. The order deadline is 11/10 and pick up is 11/20-11/24 during business hours. Click here for more details.

The PTA is thrilled to have sponsored a Skate Night for 184 Hoover Students on October 22 and a Halloween Party for 204 students on October 27. Thank you to the Administration, staff and parent volunteers who made these events possible.

If you need to be added to the Hoover Notes email list, or have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at presidenthooverpta@gmail.com.

I look forward to a great year together!

From MCPS: We are All Winners

Dear MCPS Families,

As we enter the exciting time of year known as homecoming we write with a reminder of the importance of demonstrating respect by all spectators attending MCPS athletic events. The R.A.I.S.E. core values of the school district athletics program teach and reinforce respect and sportsmanship, academic excellence, integrity and character, spirited and safe competition, and equity and access. When you attend an MCPS sporting event you are enjoying an exhibition of skills developed by student-athletes in an educational setting. Being in the stands or on the sidelines is just like being in the classroom; respect for your fellow spectators, student-athletes, coaches and referees is the expectation.
