The Great Gatsby

by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Enduring Understandings:

  • Good literature makes a statement on culture; great literature is timeless and universal and provides a lens to view our own lives and society.
  • While the 1920s, Roaring Twenties, were a height of wealth, fashion, and jobs, they were also a time of moral neglect, loss of responsibility, and political activism.

Essential Questions:

  • What was Fitzgerald saying about the 1920s? Was it truthful/reliable?
  • How does literature reflect a culture or time period?
  • Can fiction reveal truth? Should a story teach you something?
  • How is one’s life affected either by the process of self-discovery or by the failure to try to understand oneself?
  • Why do some people have difficulty distinguishing between what is reality and what is illusion?
