Follow up: Both activities are underneath the readings on the site. Complete both activities by

end of week.

There are extra resources (websites are linked on site) for the ‘Becoming a Martian’ activity.

Students feel free to do extra google research if interested!

Wednesday:

  • Do a rotation: Animation Station, Continuing reading activities, �Game Of Awesome (tki literacy game) with me.

Friday fun activity:

  • Solar system booklet - one for every child.
  • Write 3 facts on each page about each planet (pencil). Use Google or our space library books as your research tool.
  • Read the story and discuss our own written facts in smalls groups.
  • Colour in the planets once you’ve completed the facts!

Week 2

WALT: Use multiple resources to do our own research on the Mars One Project

  1. Read ‘The Problem with Pluto’ story.
  2. Complete the follow up activity for The Problem With Pluto : ‘Think about your thinking’ on Google Drawings.
  3. ‘Create’: Newspaper article activity: Newsflash! Pluto is no longer a planet! Write an article to inform everyone of this news!
  4. Who’s The Best?’ play. (page 36-41, School Journal Level 3, Feb 2012).

- Need 10 people in total in the group - do 3 groups of 10. After practice, film your play on iPads.

- If this doesn’t work out, can do this as a whole class, with 10 people being the stars of the show!

- Another option is for you and your friends to act out more than one character (so you can have a smaller group).

Week 3

WALT: Learn about the discovery of Pluto and why it is no longer classified as a ‘planet’

WALT: identify the difference between planets, asteroids and stars.

  1. In small group, read SJ, part 1, number 1, 2008: ‘The Ringawera’ (Makyla wants to help in the kitchen at her big koro's tango. After awhile she realised that she has been so busy helping in the kitchen that she hasn't had time to cry).
  2. After reading, complete the follow up activity for Ringawera:
  3. Play: ‘Out of this World’ (from the same School Journal). Find any 4 friends from the Tanzanians or Nepalese group and sit together to practice this play. You may do the actions after a few practices. 5 characters in the play. Teacher to roam when students are doing play.
  4. Silent reading after completing all follow up activities: �‘The Man Who enjoyed Grumbling’ - Sunshine Books.

Extra mileage:

  1. ‘Solo Flyer’ - 6 books (level: gold)
  2. ‘Spanish Omelet’ - 6 books. (level: silver)

Week 5

WALT: Use and explain several strategies for finding and learning the meaning of unknown words

WALT: Retell the story in sequence and with detail

The moon and the sun:

  1. Show moon video to class.
  2. Discussion about the moon and our misconceptions: does it make it’s own light? Is it as small as it looks?
  3. Read: Night light.
    1. Key focus during group reading: Gravity, misconceptions about the moon, using the surrounding text to help us to solve unknown words.

4. Follow up activity: Make sure the last slide (Google drawings) is ALSO completed and published on blog separately. Be able to describe your diagram and use labels.

7. Extra for experts: Use your book that you’re currently using in silent reading or Duffy book. Choose one character from the novel/short chapter book. Complete the character map from the site.

  • Books that they can also use: Trouble on the bus, or, The King’s Jokes (both level 25 Sunshine Books).

EXTRA COMP ACTIVITY to learn extra vocab: ‘How to ride a skateboard’ and ‘police dog puppy raisers’. Photocopy the story cards from the red box, pencil and paper activity.
