CHASE Placements

Firstly, our placement scheme is flexible, and can designed to fulfil your organisation’s business need and aspirations, as well as the development needs and requirements of our cohort of students. The only real constraints upon the scope of the placement opportunity you might offer are that it should be for between 1 and 6 months (that can be full time or part time) and that it should be at a suitable level for the professional development of an outstanding doctoral researcher.

Crucially, this is a funded placement for CHASE studentship award-holders, but CHASE is the sole provider of this funding. CHASE fully funds its students’ placements by offering an extension to their stipend, and can also additionally offer researchers funding to cover their travel and subsistence expenses, as necessary.

Our researchers will be eager to work with your organisation. They know that a placement can offer them in-depth skills training and experience-development that can shape their future; so, if a student applies to your placement, it will be because they are highly motivated to do so.

They will also be able to hit the ground running, having undertaken development activity throughout their time with CHASE. Their doctoral research, as you might imagine, will have developed their skills in:

Oral and written communication
Analysing and synthesising large bodies of complex information
Implementing feedback from supervisors
Independent working and meeting deadlines
Many of them will also have skills in activity planning, classroom management and guiding discussion
Many will have experience in event management, having contributed to organising academic events and conferences
Some of our researchers are artists and creative practitioners
Any they will of course have a huge variety of other skills that they might have developed during or prior to undertaking their PhD

So, what might a placement opportunity look like? I’ll just give you a couple of examples, but on the next slide you’ll see a link to see the current listings of all placement opportunities available to our doctoral researchers.

Firstly, the Hockey Museum, which is the world’s only museum of field hockey, in Woking, is offering a 3 month placement for doctoral researchers to create finding aids for the Museum’s collections. These finding aids will enhance the accessibility of the Museum’s collections and archives, as a result of the placement researcher creating summaries and descriptions so that the finding aids can be displayed online for scholars and researchers to know what material is held by the Museum. As new collections are received, the placement student will also have the opportunity to work with the Museum archivist to scope collections and apply formal structure to and document new collections.

Another example: the June Givanni Pan African Cinema Archive, which is a volunteer-run archive of historical materials relating to African and African diasporic cinemas, with Black British cinema at its core, is offering a placement opportunity to assist the team in maintaining and developing the archive. The placement is offered for for 6 months full-time, or part-time for up to 12 months by arrangement, and tasks will include collections cataloguing and digitisation; conception and delivery of film screenings and other public events; fundraising and publicity; editorial and administrative support, allowing the placement holder to gain and extend their skills and experience in all of these areas.

Hopefully we’ll be able to circulate these slides afterwards, and here are some links to both see more current placement listings and a how-to guide to offering a placement opportunity. Briefly though, what we would need form you is: to submit a form that details the nature and content of placement, designates a placement supervisor, outlines your preferred approach to selecting candidates (e.g. CV and cover letter, informal interview), and states when the placement should start. Once agreed, we would use those details to advertise the placement, at which point doctoral researchers would be able to start contacting you to agree on the terms of the placement, and finally, the researcher you appoint would apply to us for funding.

We know from evaluations from placement hosts and our doctoral researchers over the last 10 years that placements provide the researcher and the host with an experience that is very much mutually beneficial, and we encourage as many of our researchers as possible to undertake a placement opportunity. So we would love to work with you to provide another exciting opportunity for our researchers and your organisations.

Sexplain

Finally, I completed a placement with Bloomsbury Academic Publishing whilst I was a CHASE student. Having never worked outside of Higher Education before, it was a fascinating and rewarding experience for me, which gave me new skills an invaluable insight into a potential career pathway. Whilst I was there, I completed research project about Asian History textbooks for them, which went on to influence the company’s acquisition strategy. So, I really am ambassador for the kinds of knowledge exchange that can be facilitated through a partnership between our organisations.
