  • In the 21st century, ICT has significantly transformed teaching and learning practices in traditional classrooms. Despite its importance, some geographical concepts involve dynamic and complex processes that are difficult to explain using traditional teaching methods such as lectures, textbooks, and static diagrams.

  • The rapid advancement of digital technology has provided teachers with greater opportunities to integrate multimedia resources, particularly video clips, into their lessons, where they combine visual and auditory elements, enabling students to understand concepts more clearly and making learning more interactive.

  • Geography can help students develop an understanding of environmental issues both in Malaysia and around the world. It enables students to examine the relationships between people, places, and the environment while increasing their awareness of global challenges such as climate change, natural disasters, resource management, and sustainable development.

  • However, many students perceive geography as a difficult and less interesting subject. This perception is often attributed to traditional teaching methods that rely heavily on textbooks, lectures, and static maps, which may not effectively illustrate dynamic geographical processes or capture students' interest.

  • Consequently, students may experience low learning motivation, limited classroom participation, and difficulty understanding complex geographical concepts.

  • Furthermore, there is limited empirical evidence regarding the effectiveness of video clips in improving students' learning outcomes in geography, particularly in Malaysian secondary schools. While numerous studies have examined the use of multimedia technology in education, most have focused on multimedia learning in general.

  • As a result, there is insufficient evidence to determine whether video clips significantly enhance students' understanding of geographical concepts, academic achievement, motivation, and classroom engagement.
  • Therefore, there is a need to investigate the effectiveness of video clips in teaching geography whether it may contributes to improved academic achievement, increased learning motivation, and greater classroom engagement among secondary school geography students.

  • This study is to investigate the effectiveness of video clips in teaching the geography subject at the secondary school level. The study is to examine the influence of video clips on the students who are enrolled in the geography classes in a selected secondary school, on academic achievement, students’ perceptions, learning motivation and classroom engagement.

  • The research uses a quasi-experimental design, which involves pre-test and post-test assessments together with a questionnaire to collect quantitative data.

  • The findings are intended to provide insights into the effectiveness of video-based instruction within the selected research setting.

  • Several limitations should be considered when interpreting the findings of this study.

(1) Only conducted in one secondary school - small sample size – limited results.

(2) Duration of the intervention - limited – does not fully capture the long-term effects of using video clips on students’ learning outcomes.

(3) Students' questionnaire responses are based on self-reported perceptions, which may be influenced by personal opinions or response bias.

(4) External factors may influence the effectiveness of video-based instruction.

  • The findings of this study are expected to contribute to several groups of stakeholders:-

(1) Teacher - This study provides valuable evidence on the effectiveness of integrating video clips into geography lessons. The findings can help teachers understand how video-based instruction enhances students’ understanding of geographical concepts, increases learning motivation, and promotes active classroom engagement.

(2) Students - This study is expected to benefit students by providing more interactive and engaging learning experiences that enhance their understanding of geographical concepts, increase their motivation to learn, and improve their academic performance.

    • The video clips enable learners to observe the processes, movements, and changes over time, making them particularly effective for illustrating dynamic environmental phenomena such as weather systems, volcanic eruptions, floods, erosion, and urban development. This dynamic visual representation helps learners better understand how these processes occur and evolve over time.

    • Traditional teaching methods, such as lectures, maps, and textbooks, remain important; however, they are often inadequate for illustrating the complexity of geographical phenomena. For example, students may find it difficult to understand how a hurricane forms or how coastal erosion occurs without visual representations. Therefore, video clips play an important role in making these abstract concepts easier to understand by providing dynamic and realistic visual explanations.

    • This chapter describes the research methodology used to investigate the effectiveness of video clips in teaching geography. The methodology is designed to ensure that the data collected are valid, reliable, and appropriate for answering the research questions and achieving the objectives of the study.

    • This study adopts a quantitative research approach using a quasi-experimental research design. A quantitative approach is more appropriate because it enables the researcher to collect numerical data and analyse it statistically to determine the effectiveness of video clips in improving students’ learning in geography.

    • The quasi-experimental design employs a one-group pre-test and post-test design. Students are required to complete a pre-test before the intervention to measure their prior knowledge of the selected geography topic. During the intervention, geography lessons are delivered using carefully selected educational video clips that align with the curriculum and learning objectives. After the intervention, students complete a post-test to measure any changes in their academic achievement. In addition, a questionnaire is administered to gather students’ perceptions, motivation, and engagement regarding the use of video clips in geography lessons.

    • The target population for this study consists of secondary school students who are studying Geography in a selected secondary school where the subject is offered as part of the curriculum. This population is chosen because the study requires participants who are currently learning Geography and are available during the research period.

    • A sample of approximately 30 to 40 students with similar educational backgrounds will be selected to participate in this classroom-based quasi-experimental study. The sample size is considered appropriate for a one-group pre-test and post-test design, as it allows the researcher to examine changes in students' academic achievement before and after the intervention while maintaining the feasibility of data collection within a classroom setting.

    • A pre-test is administered before the implementation of the video-based lessons to assess students' prior knowledge of the selected geography topic. Following the instructional sessions, during which educational video clips are used as the primary teaching tool, students complete a post-test containing questions that are comparable in content and level of difficulty to those in the pre-test.

    • The comparison of the pre-test and post-test scores enables the researcher to determine whether students' academic achievement has improved after learning through the use of educational video clips. This comparison provides evidence of the effectiveness of the intervention in enhancing students' understanding of the selected geography topic.

All data collected are used solely for academic purposes, stored securely, and accessed only by the researcher.   • The researcher also ensures that the intervention does not disrupt normal classroom teaching and learning activities. Educational video clips are carefully selected to ensure that they are age-appropriate, relevant to the Geography curriculum, and aligned with the learning objectives. The video clips are used solely to support and enhance students' learning throughout the study.
