SFUSD HS YRBS 2023�SAMPLING INFORMATION (N=2,586)

  • The SFUSD HS YRBS 2023 survey was completed by 2, 586 of the 4,423 randomly sampled students across 20 regular and alternative high schools, a survey completion rate of 58%.

  • All classes in a required subject or all classes meeting during a particular period of the day, depending on the school, were included in the sampling frame. Systematic equal probability sampling with a random start was used to select classes from each school that participated in the survey.

  • The survey results have been statistically weighted and can be used to make important inferences about the priority health risk behaviors of all regular and alternative school students in grades 9-12.

TEXTING WHILE DRIVING

  • 25.4% of male students and 33.3% of female students report texting or emailing while driving.
  • While 11% of 9th-grade students report texting while driving, the rate increases to 32.4% among 12th graders.

SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL

  • Overall, 6.2% of students report they did not go to school because they felt they would be unsafe on their way to or from school. The proportion is higher for Hispanic/Latino students (8.7%), and highest among Latina students (12.2%).

UNSTABLE HOUSING

  • 10.7% of students report typically sleeping in a place other than their home or at a friend’s or relative’s home with their parents or guardians.

  • Overall, 1.5% of students report that the largest number of alcoholic drinks they had in a row was 10 or more. White students and Hispanic/Latino students report higher rates at 3.4% and 2.5%, respectively.

OTHER DRUG USE

  • Overall, 11.1% report ever taking prescription medications without a prescription; 4.5% report ever using inhalants; 3.2% ecstasy; 2.9% cocaine; 1.8% methamphetamines; and 1.3% heroin.

SFUSD HEALTH & WELLNESS SPOTLIGHTS

WELLNESS CENTERS

  • 39.2% of students report going to the Wellness Center at their school one or more times in the year before the survey. At 32.6%, Asian students report significantly less utilization than Black students (49.8%), White students (48%), and Hispanic/Latino (42.4%) students.

CONNECTEDNESS

  • Overall, 58.3% of students strongly agree or agree that they feel close to people at their school. The reported proportion for Black male students is significantly lower at 36.7% and is highest among White female students at 78%.

SLEEP HYGIENE

  • Just 31.1% of students report getting 8 or more hours of sleep on an average school night. Among 12th graders, the rate is significantly lower at 23.7%.
