What is the Magnet Program?

J. L. Mann High School offers three magnet focus areas:

In addition to high school graduation requirements, all magnet students must complete a series of courses in a focus area that culminates in an advanced college-credit course. All magnet students must take their 9th Grade courses in NT@M.

How Can I Enroll in Mann’s Magnet Program?

There are only two ways to attend J. L. Mann High School:

• Live in our attendance zone

​

• Apply and be accepted into the magnet academy

​

PLEASE NOTE:

​

• We do not accept 12th grade students into the magnet program

​

• There is no special permission at J. L. Mann High School

​

Homebased Students

• Students who are zoned for J. L. Mann High School (homebased students) do not have to apply to join the magnet program
• Homebased students may complete a homebased magnet declaration form in their spring IGP meeting with their high school counselor here at J. L. Mann High School
• Homebased students may declare magnet intent in the 9th, 10th or 11th grade year
• In order to earn magnet distinction, homebased students must complete all of the magnet requirements

Application Process for Non-Attendance-Area Students

• First round begins Nov. 10, 2025 at 8:00 AM and ends Nov. 25, 2025 at 4:00 PM - it is important to apply in the first round!

​

• Magnet applications are not accepted on a first-come, first-served basis

​

• Incomplete magnet applications will not be considered until they have all of the required information and/or documentation - incomplete applications will be moved to the next round

​

• Standardized test scores, awards, and teacher recommendations are not considered in the magnet application process

GCS Magnet applications are received online through Parent Backpack Portal. Parents of students outside of GCS can create a user account for the purpose of applying for magnet. Once in your account:

1. Select “Programs” from the column on the left.
2. Select “Apply to a Program.” A list will appear.
3. Select “Apply” beside Magnet Academies to begin the application.

Parents will be able to apply for multiple magnet academies online, but they will be able to submit the magnet application only once per year

​

Parents should make sure to select all magnet academies for which their student desires to apply and complete all sections of the magnet application before submitting it

​

• Paper applications are not available at the school. They must be requested and submitted through the district office.

​

• Please read the Magnet Academies FAQs before completing the application.

​

• Emailed or faxed applications will not be accepted by the district office.

Application - Types of Information

• Required application information includes demographic info, grades, school attendance and school discipline
• GCS student information can be pulled in by our PowerSchool system
• These criteria are scored: grades, school attendance and school discipline from the second semester of a student’s 7th Grade (2024-2025) year
• Details on how applications are scored can be found on the FAQs page

​

• If a student does not have a discipline report, an administrator at the middle school may submit “Student has no discipline report” in a signed statement on school letterhead

​

• It is the parent’s responsibility to request and provide all of the required documentation from the middle schools, if not provided through PowerSchool

​

​

​

Application Submission

• Incomplete magnet applications will not be considered until they are complete - this includes all requested information and documentation - and will be moved to the next round if not completed by the deadline

​

• The magnet coordinator will inform the parent if a magnet application is incomplete as soon as possible after its receipt (due to the volume of magnet applications received in the first round, it could be several days)

​

• J. L. Mann High School does not accept faxed documentation

​

Application Scoring

Magnet applications are scored using criteria from 7th Grade, 2nd Semester

​

1. Grades up to 12 points (GPA (4-point scale) x 3)
2. Attendance up to 4 points (4 = up to 5; 0 = more than 5)
3. Discipline up to 5 points (1 point per referral)�(Grades, attendance, and discipline are automatically scored by the application program if the student was a GCS student in 7th Grade)

Minimum qualifying score = 17 �Maximum qualifying score = 21

Magnet Selection Process

• Students who have a sibling returning to J. L. Mann High School next school year will receive preference only in the first round (sibling returning must be identified on the magnet application)

​

• Students who have a parent working full time at J. L. Mann High School (not at another GCS location) will apply through Change-in-Assignment, not magnet

​

• Students with the highest qualifying score (21) are chosen first

​

• A lottery system is used when there are more qualifying students than available slots for a focus area in a grade level (i.e. Math 9^th grade)

​

Magnet Selection Process Continued

• Students with the same qualifying score are arranged by a lottery system
• Students are chosen in rank order by declining score until all slots for a focus area in a grade level are filled

​

• When all slots for a focus area in a grade level are filled, any remaining qualifying students are assigned a wait list position

​

• Students who qualify in the first round are offered slots before anyone who qualifies in the second round - no matter their score

​

• We have historically filled all of our slots with first-round qualifying students

​

​

How Many Magnet Slots are Available?

• Varies with projected enrollment for the following school year

​

• We have no idea how many slots we will have next school year for each focus area in each grade level

​

• The school district may decide to freeze qualifying students on the wait lists due to a change in projected enrollment for the following school year or give us additional slots after the first round

​

​

Please make sure J. L. Mann is your first choice before accepting a slot!

​

​

​

Magnet Acceptance Notification

• First round parents will be contacted using the email or the phone number on the magnet application by December 10, 2025

​

• Deadline for magnet acceptance of a slot is December 17, 2025

​

• After December 17, 2025, we will offer any available slots to the students on the wait list for the focus area in a grade level by rank order if our wait lists are not frozen

​

• Parents of accepted magnet students will receive bus transportation forms from me in late spring via email

​

• Parents can choose home or courtesy stop service

​

• While the magnet bus gets students to and from school, it may be a long commute - some routes are over an hour long

​

• Magnet buses have WiFi to allow students to work on assignments while riding to/from school

• Once students are accepted into the magnet program they do not need to reapply to the magnet program each school year

​

• Planning and Demographics will automatically roll over registration for current magnet students each school year. If a current magnet student does not plan on attending J. L. Mann HS the following school year, the parent/guardian of the current magnet student will need to contact Planning and Demographics.

​

• Magnet students must maintain satisfactory grades (C or better), have satisfactory attendance, and keep a satisfactory disciplinary record in addition to being on track to complete their magnet distinction requirements

​
