Taharah- Cleanliness

Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم (Peace be Upon him)said that “Purity is half of faith.”

Islamic Manner of Using the Washroom.

When entering the washroom, one should say “Allahumma innee a’oodhi bika min al-khubthi wa’l-khabaa’ith” (O’ Allah, I seek refuge with you from male and female devils)

  • Enter the washroom with your left leg
  • Sit down to answer the call of nature
  • Do not face the Qibla (Mecca) or turn your back towards it.
  • Do not touch or clean your private parts with your right hand.
  • Do not expose yourself when urinating or passing stool.
  • Do not spray everywhere when urinating.

  • Once you have finished make sure no more impurity is coming out. Wash yourself (using left hand) with water up to 3 times or an odd number more than 3. You can use tissue to clean yourself first than wash.
  • Do not talk unless it is necessary while in the washroom
  • When done, put your clothes on properly and leave the washroom with your right foot.
  • Wash your hands with soap

When leaving the washroom, one should say “Ghufraanak” (I seek your forgiveness)

NB: These are the basics of using the washroom. Please learn them well.

Conditions of Prayer to be valid

  1. That the time for prayer has begun. This is the most important condition. A prayer offered before its time has begun is not valid, according to scholarly consensus, because Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Verily, As‑Salaah (the prayer) is enjoined on the believers at fixed hours” [Quran 4:103]

2. Covering the Required Body Parts. If a person prays with his required body uncovered, his/her prayer is not valid, because Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“O Children of Adam! Take your adornment (by wearing your clean clothes) while praying” –[Quran 7:31]

NB: For Males- Between the naval and the knee

For Females- All her body except her hands and face.

3. i) Cleanliness (body) - Must be in the state of Wudu or Gusl (Bath).

Gusl (bath) compulsory after discharge of semen.

ii) Clean clothes- Free from any impurities. Dust and sweat are not classed as impurities. Impurities are mainly discharge of humans and animals.

4. Clean Place- Place of prayer must be free from impurities.

5. Facing the direction of the Kabah (Makkah)-

“so, turn your face in the direction of Al-Masjid Al-Haraam (at Makkah). And wheresoever you people are, turn your faces (in prayer) in that direction” [Quran 2:144]

6. Intention- Make intention for the prayer you are praying in your heart before the prayer.

‘Umar ibn al-Khattaab (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: “Actions are but by intentions and each person will have but that which he intended.” Allah does not accept any deed unless it is accompanied by the right intention.
