Practicing Situational Awareness

Many people are conscious of their surroundings. We notice a variety of things, such as when the distracted motorist in front of us is texting at a red light, or when the employee a few desks away is chewing their lunch a bit too noisily.

These observations are undoubtedly situational awareness in certain ways, but they aren't the kinds of observations that will save your life. Situational Awareness Training can help with this.

Recognizing the Sound of a Gun

Have you ever heard a gunshot before? Most of us believe we've seen enough movies to recognize a gun when we hear one, but in active shooter situations, most people don't realize the sound they're hearing is a gun until they see the gunman. In their Online Active Shooter Training, one of the first things Defender School does is fire a pistol outside the facility while the class members are inside.

Knowing How to Overtake a Gunman

In some active shooter scenarios, evacuating the building or escaping the attacker may be impossible. Knowing how to overtake the gunman in that situation might save your life. In their Active Shooter Training classes, they educate students how to intercept a firearm.

The easiest way to acquire this skill is to practice with a toy gun, but the most important thing to remember is to push the gun's barrel up and back toward the shooter's wrist
