Knowing Christ: Our Highest Pursuit
Philippians 3:10
"That I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death..."
Paul's yearning wasn't for intellectual understanding, but for an intimate, experiential relationship. He sought to know Christ above all else, making it the singular focus of his existence.
Paul's Radical Renunciation
Before Christ, Paul (Saul) was a man of immense stature: a zealous Pharisee, highly educated, and influential. He had every reason to boast in his earthly achievements.
Yet, when he encountered Jesus on the Damascus road, all his former gains became "rubbish" compared to the surpassing worth of knowing Christ.
This isn't about discarding our lives, but repositioning our ultimate value. What do we truly prize?
Experiencing His Power
"...and the power of His resurrection..."
Knowing Christ isn't just a mental assent; it's an encounter with His dynamic, life-changing power. This is the same power that raised Jesus from the dead, active and available in our daily lives.
It’s not just about knowing about the resurrection; it's about experiencing its transforming force within us.
Sharing in His Sufferings
"...and the fellowship of His sufferings, being made conformable unto His death..."
It might seem counterintuitive to desire suffering, but Paul understood that true intimacy with Christ includes walking with Him through every season, even difficult ones.
Fellowship Defined
Fellowship here means "to share in," "to partner with." It's an invitation to deep solidarity.
Conformity to His Death
This isn't about physical death but dying to self—our desires, ambitions, and will—to live fully for Christ.
Jehoshaphat: A Case Study
King Jehoshaphat, facing an insurmountable enemy, didn't rely on his own strength. His story in 2 Chronicles 20 perfectly illustrates the Philippians 3:10 progression.
He Made God His Highest Pursuit
His first response to crisis was to seek the Lord, proclaiming a fast throughout Judah.
He Experienced God’s Power
God answered, promising to fight the battle for them. Jehoshaphat and his people experienced a miraculous victory.
He Stepped into the Fellowship of Trust & Sacrifice
He sent worshipers ahead of the army, trusting God's word above all else, even when it meant facing the enemy without conventional weapons.
The Progression of Knowing Christ
Paul's profound statement is a unified journey, not three separate ideas.
1. "That I may know Him"
Relationship: Priority above all else.
2. "...and the power of His resurrection"
Transformation: Power to live a new life.
3. "...and the fellowship of His sufferings"
Identification: Walking with Christ even when it costs you.
This progression invites us to a deeper, more authentic discipleship.
Call to Discipleship
Knowing About Him vs. Knowing Him
"Not that I may know about Him. Not that I may sing about Him. But know Him — in the power of His resurrection and in the fellowship of His sufferings."
This is the heart of Paul's cry and our invitation today. It's a call to move beyond surface-level acquaintance to a life-altering intimacy with Jesus.
