Metaphor
A metaphor is used to make a comparison between two things that aren't alike but do have something in common.
EXAMPLE:
‘Their heart is an empty cave’
Simile
A figure of speech that compares two different things using the words ‘like’ or ‘as’.
EXAMPLE:
‘Her kiss was as cold as an icicle’
Hyperbole
Using exaggeration that is not meant to be taken literally.
EXAMPLE:
‘His fist was as big as a rock’
Rhyme
A piece of writing where the lines end with similar sounds.
EXAMPLE:
‘Twinkle, twinkle little star,
How I wonder what you are.’
Nuance
How specific you are when you describe something.
EXAMPLE:
Instead of saying ‘a car’, you might say ‘a black B&W’.
What is an ode?
An ode is a celebration song or poem to a person, time, place or thing.
EXAMPLE:
The poems we are writing today are celebrations of our childhoods.
Simile:
‘Her kiss was as cold as an icicle’
Metaphor:
‘You are my sunshine’
Rhyme:
‘Twinkle, twinkle little star,
How I wonder what you are’
Nuance:
‘Not just a car, but a black B&W’
Hyperbole:
‘His fist was as big as a rock’
