• The global reach of the 2021 virtual conference is recognized as a key project value
• Current count: participants from approximately 55 countries
• We will be establishing low-cost/free virtual attendance capabilities for future BioC conferences, even when in-person meetings resume

What are some paths forward for Bioconductor?

• Governance -- difficult, time consuming, necessary
• priorities - coming to consensus on a dynamic field
• succession - people move on
• keeping current and adding value
• We will obtain professional consultation on governance processes and documents
• Sharing the effort: "On a good day …"
• The work I need to do is done openly, and packages I contribute conform to Bioc gatekeeping and distribution protocols
• The problems I encounter are reported promptly and clearly and I try to offer solutions
• I try to understand questions raised on the support site, offer solutions and introduce new resources to remedy recurrent problems
• I join and lead TAB-associated/CAB-associated working groups
• I contribute to the Community-based package review process

ROSCOH: Humanity's impacts on Bioconductor

• Structural difficulties: unbalanced/inequitable access to resources that enable participation in and contribution to Bioconductor
• Security risks: effects of bad actors, direct and indirect, specifically related to hacking, software supply chain attacks, unintended software-driven consumption of costly bandwidth
• BUT -- general benificence of the community and institutions of learning and government, providing resources tangible and intangible

ROSCOH: Bioconductor's impacts on humanity

• Open contributions to scientific practice, attested to by attendance and sponsorships, among many other sources of evidence
• Education
• a central element of the project since its inception
• mostly graduate level, but expanding
• Outreach -- strong and improving
• Very low-cost labor and "public intellectual property"
• lots of code and workflows, all platforms
• non-restrictive licensing
• vital for organizations that have few finances and resources.
