Visit www.PopulationEducation.org for more classroom

resources and WorldPopulationHistory.org for the full lesson plan.

We live in a demographically divided world with large disparities in population growth rates and the quality of life indicators that impact those growth rates.

Fertility rate

The number of children that would be born to a female if they were to live to the end of their childbearing years.

The fertility rate for each of the six regions is below the map to the right.

Discussion

  1. What can the fertility rate tell you about your region?
  2. Why do you think fertility rates are different between regions?
  3. What kinds of factors contribute to lower or higher fertility rates in different places?

Instructions

On the next four slides, you will be looking at four specific factors that can influence fertility rates. For each factor:

  • Fill in your region’s statistic in the column to the left.
  • Rearrange your region so that the region with the highest factor (not fertility rate) is at the top of the stack, and the region with the lowest factor is at the bottom.
  • Answer these questions in the speaker notes below the slide:

  1. How did the order or regions

change for each of the four indicators?

  • We looked at four factors that might influence fertility rates. Can you think of others?

  • Which regions of the world have high levels of variation in fertility rates?

  • Can you think of any problems with exploring the data in this way?
