THE RECORD

~38 MIN

9:02 A.M. TO ~9:40 A.M. · AUGUST 27, 1896

A war shorter than a class period

The Anglo-Zanzibar War of 1896 is the shortest war historians have on record. It started and finished in well under an hour, one August morning off the coast of East Africa.

THE HOLDOUT

Sultan Khalid seizes the palace

Zanzibar was an island sultanate off East Africa, heavily under British influence. When the pro-British Sultan Hamad bin Thuwaini died suddenly, his cousin Khalid bin Barghash seized the palace with some 3,000 defenders — without British approval.

THE STANDOFF

'Leave the palace by 9 a.m.' 'No.'

Britain issued an ultimatum: Khalid must step down and leave the palace by 9:00 a.m. on August 27. He refused and barricaded himself inside with his guards and a few old cannons — against the guns of the Royal Navy.

THE DEADLINE

At 9:02, the warships opened fire

Two minutes after the ultimatum expired, British warships in the harbor began bombarding the palace. The outdated defenses were shattered almost immediately. It was less a war than a demolition.

THE ENDING

The sultan fled; the flag came down

Within about 38 minutes the palace was in ruins, the sultan's flag was cut down, and Khalid escaped to the nearby German consulate to claim asylum. Britain installed a sultan of its choosing that same day.

THE POINT

'War' can mean 38 minutes or 30 years — the word hides everything.

A single label covers wildly different realities. Always ask what actually happened, not just what it was called. And note: even a 38-minute war still cost about 500 lives.

DISCUSS

What do you think?

Should something 38 minutes long even count as a 'war'?

Does calling it 'the shortest war' hide the ~500 people who died?
