What is Volume?

Solid volume is measured in cubic metres or cubic centimetres.

Volume is used for measuring three-dimensional shapes. There are three dimensions needed for calculating volume.

The volume of this square is one cubic centimetre.

What Is the Volume of This Shape?

We can count each 1cm3 or we might notice that there are 3 rows of 4 cubes (4 + 4 + 4 = 12) or 4 rows of 3 cubes (3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12).

This shape has a volume of 12cm3.

What Is the Volume of This Shape?

We can count each 1cm3 or we can notice that there are 2 rows of 2 cubes but there are two levels.

2 x 2 = 4

There are 4 cubes on the bottom layer and 4 cubes on the top layer.

4 + 4 = 8

This shape has a volume of 8cm3.
