Second, discuss online safety and responsibility, such as:

  • Do not accept a "friend" request without parents' or a teacher's permission
  • Only chat with people in your "contact list"
  • Parents will have a login and e-mail account details
  • Students should report any suspicious activity to parents or a teacher

Third, prepare your students for using Skype by discussing the following Skype etiquette:�

  • Be respectful and do not act silly
  • Be aware of body movements in front of the camera
  • Practice speaking loudly & clearly and with confidence prior to the Skype session
  • Take turns speaking in front of the camera
  • Be careful not to use slang, especially with foreign Skype partners
  • Prepare students to answer unexpected questions, allowing them to refer these questions back to the teacher

Fourth, confirm your Skype call ahead of time:

  • E-mail the teacher, author, or guest speaker 24 hours ahead of time
  • If possible, setup a test Skype call to test sound and video
  • Be aware of time zone differences

  • As you have seen so far, Skype can open your students' eyes to the world beyond their classroom. The next few slides give several examples of how Skype can be used in your classroom to engage students and enhance their learning experience.

Author Visits and Guest Lectures:

  • You can bring authors right into your classrooms, allowing your students to interact with them and ask questions.
  • The video is a short documentary about author and illustrator Mike Artnell visiting a class of students.

Skype Pen Pals:

  • Rather than communicating by paper, teachers can have their students connect with other students around the world!
  • Students can discuss different cultures, ideas, and perspectives.

Broadcasting a Performance:

  • If your class creates a project or a presentation that can be performed, let Skype broadcast your performance!
  • Parents, friends, and any interested party can view the students' work.

  • Take your students around the world with Skype.
  • Connect with other teachers and classrooms.
  • Learn about other cultures, and teach them about yours!

    • Participants include Wisconsin 3rd Graders and an expert in Australia

  • Space Knowledge
    • Participants include a group of Pakistani High schoolers teaching 5 year olds the basics of outer space.

Much like lesson planning, Pre-Call Activities will enhance the impact of the call on the classroom.

Planning activities could include:

• Familiarizing students with geographic location,language,culture,age

group

• Information Literacy (locate)

• Google Earth(distance)

Reflection- After the Call

Post-Call Activities include:

  • Informal assessment: debrief right after the Skype call. Have students talk about what just happened. Read the backchannel log out loud and collaboratively add anything that was not documented.
  • Information Literacy (evaluate, analyze, categorize data collected)
  • Create documentary (video clip) from video clips taken during the Skype call
  • Create Photo Slideshow of images taken during the Skype call
  • Write reflective blog posts
  • (Paper & Pencil) Journal entries: Give students prompts
  • Create a Video recording from your debriefing session
  • Audio podcasting
  • Embed images and video into blog post
  • Share with parents (informal at home) or host a parent presentation session at school
  • Present to larger audience (entire school, community, conference)
