Dear Students and Families,
Welcome to online student learning for Art Classes at Flinn Middle School. I have been teaching at Flinn for a little over eight years and this experience is as new to me as it is to you. I am working with other middle school art teachers in the Rockford School District, to give you lessons that will be fun learning experiences. When we get back to our building we’ll be able to play with all the materials in our classroom again. I miss you and I know we’ll be back together again, making lots of cool things. In the meantime I hope you are making art at home, writing and just being creative in general and of course being kind and helpful to your family. You can contact me at leeann.sluiter@rps205.com.

Welcome to our second week of working online. This week we have a choice board and you can choose which of the projects you want to do. There are directions and examples for each project. I hope you have fun with it. It may take you longer than one week and that is ok. Just work on it for 20-30 minutes each day, unless you want to do more.

Dear Students and Families,
Welcome to the third week of distance learning. I realize that many of you don’t have art supplies at home but you probably have pencils and paper. This week I am going to share some of my favorite artist’s drawings and ask you to do some drawing. Remember when we did contour line drawing in class? Having that experience will serve you well as you draw from observation and practice those skills you learned earlier in the semester. Have fun, stay safe and make some art.
Contact me by email and let me know how you are doing. If you can include a photo of work that you have done, that would be great. Teachers started tracking students who are working or not, on Monday, April 13, 2020.

Dear Art Students,
I hope this message finds you healthy and safe. Please know that you can email me any time about any thing and I will respond to your message. I know you miss your fellow students and teachers and some day we will be back together again. Even though you are home, it is the expectation that you will continue to complete the work that your teachers assign. The work eventually will be graded and you surely want to get a good grade when that is established.
Please contact me via email to leeann.sluiter@rps205.com. Please send a picture of the projects to my email address.as you complete them. I will be setting up Google Classroom for each class and will invite you when I set up your class.
Until Later,

Hey there Flinsters,
You have a choice of doing one of the three projects on the following three slides. Choose one and work on it all week. If you want to make a second project, that’s great too.
This painting is titled, “The Red Room, Etretat,” created in 1899 by Felix Edouard Vailotton. It is in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. The scene is of a quiet setting in Artist’s living room.
Draw a picture or write a story about a moment in time in your living room.
This is an authentic Garniture made in 1575. It was worn by knights when in battle. If you could create your own Garniture or complete suit of armor, what would it look like? You can draw your idea on paper and make it into a sculpture using aluminum foil and other materials you may have at home.
This is the Hindu God, Ganesh. As you can see, he is part elephant and part man. Think about an animal you like and admire the qualities of. Paint, draw or sculpt an imaginary figure that combines features of this animal and a human. Use whatever materials you have on hand. Give your creation a name.
Dear Students,
Welcome to week five of Remote Learning. I hope this message finds you healthy and safe. I was running third quarter report cards about an hour ago and pulling up your school pictures too. It really hit me hard that I miss you so much. I can’t wait to get back into the classroom with all our art supplies and you making cool stuff.
Guess what? We are going to have new floors in our classrooms and the walls will be painted. I am lookng forward to having that nice working environment. Our floors were looking a bit shabby, weren’t they? The only part I dislike about getting these new things is that I have to box up EVERYTHING in our classroom and store rooms. Can you imagine how long that is going to take?
Please make some art this week and keep in touch with me via email or Google Classroom.

Welcome to another week of Remote Learning. I hope you have been able to get out of the house when the sun is shining and it is warm outside. I was able to dig up some flowers from my flower beds and give them to Mrs. Cox, the sixth grade Social Studies Teacher, for her house. I like Mrs. Cox. She and I worked together on a big project several years ago and got to know each other a lot better. Her students were working on the Egyptian Unit and they would come down to the art room to work on their projects with she and I. They did a lot of sewing to make costumes for a skit they were presenting to the rest of sixth grade. She is a much better seamstress than I. They also each made an art project. It was a great experience that I think they’ll never forget.
I have turned my oldest son’s bedroom into my office. I had to clean it out first because it had become a dumping ground. It’s looking pretty good now. .I have added plants and fresh flowers. You know how much I love plants!
Enjoy the projects for the week of 5/11/20.

Dear Students,
What a week this past week has been. I went to Flinn and packed up everything in our classroom and storage rooms. I lifted and carried, hauled out to the hall and threw away so much stuff you would not believe it. We’ll still have plenty of ART supplies though.
Are you helping out around your house? Can you cook a meal or do your own laundry? Can you look after your younger brothers and sisters? The adults in your home will really appreciate it.
I hope you had a good week last week and are ready to get some work done for this week. This assignment should be fun for you. Stay healthy and safe.

Dear Students,
Welcome to our last week of remote learning. It has certainly been an unusual semester. Our school district, administration, teachers, and staff have stepped up to give you opportunities and tools throughout this time, to help you continue learning. For those of you who are doing the work, take pride in knowing that you are motivated to work even when the teacher is not in the room. The ability to do that is huge and says a lot about your character and drive to be the best you can be. These traits will serve you well throughout the rest of your life, in all that you do.
Thank you for being in my class this year and sharing your ideas and skills. Teachers and students share a reciprocal relationship and I have learned from you as well.. Stay safe and healthy. Enjoy your summer.
