1. What the role of the mass media in our life nowadays is
The mass media play an important part in our lives. Newspapers, radio and especially TV inform us of what is going on in this world and give us wonderful possibilities for education and entertainment. They also influence the way we see the world and shape our views.
The main source of news for millions of people is television. People like TV news because they can see everything with their own eyes. And that's an important advantage. Seeing, as we know, is believing. Besides, it's much more difficult for politicians to lie in front of the cameras than on the pages of newspapers.
Still, many people prefer the radio. It's good to listen to in the car, or in the open air, or when you do something about the house.
Newspapers don't react to events as quickly as TV, but they usually provide us with extra details, comment and background information.
The Internet has recently become another important source of information. Its main advantage is that news appears on the screen as soon as things happen in real life and you don't have to wait for news time on TV.
2. What makes the news interesting
News is information about something that has happened. There are different kinds of news: popular news is about private life of celebrities; economic news is about business, trade and financial situation; political news is about political events and health, social life, cultural news. Many kinds of stories make news. It depends on what is happening on a particular day. Events make news because they are out of the ordinary. To most people, a story that describes an unusual happening is far more interesting that one about what’s happening and if an important event happens, it’s news.News can be good or bad. Not all newspapers and TV programmes report the events objectively, but serious journalists and TV reporters try to be fair and provide us with reliable information. News depends on people who create it. Some people say that journalists and TV reports are given too much freedom. They often intrude on people’s private lives. They follow celebrities and print sensational stories about them which are untrue or half-true. These people want to make their programmes more popular. The main reason for this news is desire for money.
3. How people can be influenced by television
Movies and television influence people's behaviour. In my opinion they can influence us positively and negatively.
Movies showing violent acts make people violent too. The more we see the violence the less we become sensitive. Then the violence doesn't seem wrong and make us to commit it.
Television brings out a negative influence on health. It makes us less active. If we watch TV too much, we become lazy both physically and mentally. We also become unhealthy. We would rather watch a sports event than play it.
Movies and television also benefit us by providing a source of vast knowledge. Television broadens the window of the world by showing research advances in various fields of study.
The best influence of watching TV is that it relieves much of our stress. TV helps us to escape from our own problems even for a little while. Sometimes they may even show a positive way to solve our problems.
It is true that television can influence our behaviour negatively, but it also brings positive changes in our lives. The influence on the behaviour depends on how much you watch, what you watch and how you respond to what you watched.
3. How people can be influenced by television
Television has strong influence on people's minds. On the one hand, it can influence positively. Television moulds public opinion. It influences the way people look at the world and make them change their views. People become more informed by watching documentaries, science programmes and by learning about important economic, social and political events of the day. TV brings the world into living rooms. It gives opportunities to see famous people and great events, that will pass into history, to hear the latest news, to listen to political discussions and just to relax after hard day's work.
On the other hand, television can influence people negatively. It makes them lazier. People read, talk and think less, stay at home instead of going out. People begin to forget how to spend their free time. It is very harmful for health and developing personalities to be glued to the TV screen all day long. Some TV programmes can even make people aggressive and turn them into criminals.
All in all, television influences greatly. People should use it wisely to avoid negative influence.
4. Positive and negative sides of TV
Television today has become one of the most important forms of mass media. It informs, educates and entertains people. It influences the way people look at the world and makes them change their views. In other worlds, mass media, and especially television, mould public opinion.
There are two viewpoints on television. Some people think that television is doing a lot of harm. People begin to forget how to spend their free time. It makes them speak less with each other, visit less friends or relatives. Now all their free time is given to television.
There are a lot of people who consider TV helpful because it gives us a lot of information. Millions of people like to watch TV in their spare time. The TV-set is not just a piece of furniture. It is someone who is one of the family. We become more informed by watching documentaries, science programmes and by learning about important economic, social and political events of the day.
We can see famous people and great events that will pass into history. Television brings the world into our living room. We see people in our country and in other land, and learn their customs, traditions and problems. TV gives us opportunities to see the best actors and performances, to hear the latest news, to listen to political discussions.
To conclude, TV simply helps us to relax after hard day's work, it offers a great variety of entertaining and musical programmes. Still, it's not a good thing for children to be glued to the TV screen all day long. It's very harmful for their health and for developing personalities.
5. If we can trust all the information we read or watch
In my opinion the quality of the news in our mass media is rather good. However, it has some serious problems.�To start with, newspapers, radio, the Internet and especially TV inform us about what is going in the world and give us wonderful possibilities for education and entertainment. There are a lot of different newspapers, radio and TV programs which report the news objectively, provide us with reliable information. Moreover, serious quality newspapers devote their pages to finance matters and business, cover national and international news, report in detail on serious problems. Furthermore, all news is available in the Internet.�On the other hand, there are some serious problems. The press is full of gossips and scandals. Some journalists and reporters intrude on people’s private lives, follow celebrities and print sensational stories about them, which are untrue or half-true.�Some people say that the Internet is full of trash and we can’t trust all the news. What is more, some mass media is not controlled by the government, we can’t trust all the information we read or watch.�To conclude, I can say that in spite of all disadvantages the quality of the news in our mass media is good.
6. If the Internet is a great excitement or a danger for people, why/why not
The Internet is probably one of the greatest inventions of the last century. However, some people believe that the Internet creates many problems. From my point of view, the Internet has a lot of advantages, but there are also some disadvantages of using it.
On the one hand, the Internet is a great excitement for us. It is a big store of information. You can find information for your schoolwork or just to find out more about your hobbies, sports or current events. Furthermore, the Internet provides us with a pleasant way of spending spare time. You can watch films, listen to music, read books, newspapers and magazines, play games and even buy something from your favorite shops. The Internet connects many people all over the world. It is easy for us to stay in touch with our friends by chatting and sending e-mail messages.
On the other hand, the Internet is a big danger. The most negative effect of the Internet might be people`s addiction to it. For many people the Internet becomes more “real” than reality, and their own lives seem boring. Many children look at a screen for more hours each day than they do anything else, including studying and sleeping. Endless hours in front of a screen can also cause eye strain and headache. One more disadvantage of the Internet is the absence of information control. Children receive wide access to sites with violence which promote hate. Also, you can get viruses on your computer by visiting any websites you don`t trust. What is more, there is too much advertising instead of real information in the Internet.
The Internet can be dangerous and useful at the same time.
However, I believe that it gives us more advantages and opportunities than disadvantages and problems.
7. Mobile telephones
Mobile telephones have become very popular nowadays. They are a wonderful form of communication. You can do a lot of things with the help of a mobile phone, so it is a very useful gadget.
Firstly, mobile phones help people to make calls immediately. Many people want to stay in touch with their friends and family everywhere, so they use mobile phones. People can always call different services in difficult situations, for example, police or emergency.
Secondly, some people can subscribe on different mobile services and get messages, informing them about the weather or the recent news.
In addition, if you have one of the new multimedia mobiles, you can log on to the Internet, pay for things you buy, play different games or listen to music. Mobile phones give you a great possibility to interact with TV programmes and send text messages, take photos to send them to your friends.
So, mobile phones can help you in many situations and sometimes even entertain you. That's why mobile phones have become so popular nowadays.
