Usage Data Overview

WHAT IS COUNTER (R5)?

  • The standard for counting the use of electronic resources at the title, database, or platform level
    • Views/downloads or ‘uses’
    • Turnaway data
    • OA usage
    • Usage by YOP
    • Electronic journals, books, other media (items)

WHAT IS SUSHI?

  • Standardized Usage Statistics Harvesting Initiative
  • API for each vendor
  • Allows usage data to be harvested manually or automatically to be downloaded or used in Alma Analytics reports
  • Set up in vendor record under the ‘Usage Data’ tab

Example Scenarios

  • We’ve had a new ebook package for over a year, and have heard some of the titles are being used in classes- how can we see which licenses we need to upgrade to expand access?
  • We have the opportunity to work with a publisher to swap out titles in our subscription package- which ones should we swap?
  • We have two databases with similar, overlapping content – which one should we keep?
  • We have an upcoming negotiation with a publisher and would like to discuss pricing and OA content – how can we tell how much OA content are researchers are using?
  • We have the option to purchase an archive or continue with a current subscription – how can we tell if our researchers are using older or newer content?

Creating Analyses

USAGE DATA (COUNTER)

  • Used for C4 or C5 Data
  • Pulls directly from harvested data or uploaded COUNTER reports
  • Good for usage for individual titles to databases and platforms
  • Cons – no CPU calculation

E-INVENTORY/ DIGITAL USAGE

  • Pulls information directly from PO line – can help calculate CPU (E)
  • Can run analyses by vendor (E)
  • Can help with CPU for consortia resources (E)
  • Can be used for content in IR (DU)
  • Cons – difficult to identify issues in data

Other Usage Analyses

LINK RESOLVER USAGE

  • Can be used to create reports that provide specific details of link resolver usage as well as a broad perspective of how the Alma link resolver is used
    • How many times was a resource ‘viewed’ in the catalog? How many times did the link produce no results?

PRIMO VE ANALYTICS

  • Runs reports on patron activities performed in the user interface
    • What were the top searchers in Primo? What devices do our researchers use to search Primo?

  • Under ‘Access Analytics (Primo)’
