Hi, my name is Brittany Pelletier.

I am an office administrator with Salisbury United Church, in Sherwood Park (which is about 5-10 minutes east of Edmonton). I have been with Salisbury for just over a year.

Prior to my position here, I worked as an architectural technologist for a local home builder and I own an interior design company where I’m the principal designer. So, I use Canva regularly in my client presentations, which translates to having about three years of experience using Canva. That, compared with my experience using it in my daily tasks as a church admin, is why I will be sharing with you today some of the most beneficial ways you can implement Canva in your role as a church office administrator.

You can resize designs. So, for example, if you want to make various products with one design, you can start by creating a flyer on a standard letter-size paper and then resize it to an 11 x 17 poster.

You are able to edit image and video backgrounds. This is one of my favorite features and something I frequently use in my design projects but not very often in my administrative role with the church.

Posters for Special Events or Fundraising

(click) I also frequently use Canva to create posters for special events, fundraisers and recently for a joint Lenten series (click) between our church and First United Church in Fort Saskatchewan, which is a town about 10-15 minutes from Sherwood Park.

The poster gives a brief synopsis of why we were doing a joint Lenten Journey and then it also outlined the various services with who the worship leader was each week, who was leading the sermon and how services would be performed since some weeks were by video. It also listed any special guests such as musical performances and ensembles. With the ability to easily make a copy, I was able to customize the poster for First United and then using the “resize” option, converted the size of the poster to have both a regular 8.5 x 11 size to send out to the congregation and a larger 11 x 17 format to post throughout the church.

(click) For fundraisers or special events, I enjoy searching for a particular theme and then tailoring it to reflect the desired look I’m hoping to achieve. Having a template that I can customize makes my posters look incredibly professional without putting in as much time or effort as it would take if I were to create something similar in another program. (click) As part of my role here at Salisbury, I typically help other committees create posters for various campaigns like our semi-annual bottle drives with proceeds donated to a new charity of choice each time and our ongoing food bank donation bin, I’m able to add or remove elements as necessary, make copies and store them on Canva’s cloud storage, making it possible for anyone, anywhere to view, edit or download designs that I’ve created just by logging into our Canva account.

(click) The Food bank donation poster here was customized to include a QR code that directly links to the donation page for Strathcona Food Bank. I was able to implement the QR Code by using the QR App in Canva and link it directly to the Strathcona Food Bank’s donation page. More on that in a few minutes… (click)

(click) Another way I frequently use Canva is for creating notices and signs for posting throughout the church.

Since we keep our main door locked during office hours, I need a way to direct people with specific instructions for package deliveries, as we share part of our building with a daycare, which is one of our tenants. So, I want to ensure visitors are directed to my office and deliveries are made to the appropriate door.

As you can see, these notices are all very unique. Each one began as a template through Canva that I found through a search for a particular theme.

As an example, I needed to create instructions for Amazon deliveries that would arrive when the office was closed and main doors were locked.

(click) So, I searched for something like “package delivery”, found a template I liked and then modified the text, uploading and adding in the Amazon logo and an arrow directing to the proper entrance along with our office number in case of any issues.

Now, something I can show you at the end of the presentation is how I was able to completely customize this notice to include everything I needed. It’s very easy to move various elements around with Canva’s intuitive smart guides that show up to indicate you have centered an element to the page or another component. Plus, Canva will also give you measurements for distances between components, so if you want everything spaced equally or a specific distance, you can ensure you maintain that space.

So again, a very user-friendly intuitive graphic design tool, with endless possibilities. (click)

Magic Studio

(click) First up is the Home page or Desktop. This is what you will first see when you log in to Canva. And to get back here, you will always click on the “Home” tab.

(click) From here you can browse templates (click) or go to previous projects.

(click) You can also search for a specific theme or design in the search bar

(click) Or, if you have a specific project in mind like a Facebook Post or a Presentation, you will click on the relevant medium to design something new.

As I mentioned previously about staying “on brand”, (click) this is where you can create a brand by uploading or creating a logo and identifying specific colors to your brand so when you create materials you can always select from your brand colors, access your logo, etc.

One of the tools I frequently use is the QR code creator. (click) In the Apps tab is where you access tools like that or a variety of others.

And lastly, is Magic Studio. (click) This would be your AI tool feature. I don’t have much experience with it other than when I select an image, the magic studio will automatically suggest similar content to choose from, without having to manually search for “similar content” (click)

Finally, we have the “Apps” tab. (click) This tab features a wide variety of apps that I have barely scratched the surface of myself. I mostly use the QR Code app as mentioned previously.

(click) But here you can discover all kinds of apps. There are audio apps which would be useful if you’re going to create a video, presentation or social media post.

Something that may be incredibly useful for bilingual use is the translate app. (click)

You can translate your design by going into the translate app and selecting a language you want to translate your page to. (click) I selected French for our Kids Winter Camp design here and this is how it was translated. I didn’t make any design adjustments, but you would obviously want to re-adjust some elements to accommodate for a change in text length, etc. (click)

Creating a Design from the Photos Page

Easily Navigate to themed photos

Select from Trending photos

Search for a photo with a particular theme or subject, in the Search Bar at the top of the Photos Page

Starting a design from the Templates Page is likely the best starting point for any design you wish to create.

However, you can also start creating a design by selecting a photo first and using it in a design. (click)

To do this, you navigate to the Templates Page from the Home page and select the Photos tab. (click) It is similarly set up like the templates page (click) where you can easily navigate photo themes like Fall, Christmas, Money, etc.

(click) Or, you can select from trending photos that will appear here, under the theme options.

If you still don’t see what you’re looking for, (click) you can search for a specific theme or subject in the search bar at the top of the page.

You can also upload your own photos, but that feature is available once you begin creating your design, likely chosen from a template. (click)
