SBOE 101

  • What is the State Board of Education?�The SBOE is part of the Texas Education Agency. They set statewide school standards and curricula.
  • How are members picked?�Members are elected by Texans. The TX governor appoints the chair from elected members to lead the meetings.
  • How many members are there?�There are 15 members. Currently, there are 9 Republicans and 6 Democrats on the SBOE.

  • How often are members elected?�Members serve 4 year terms. Typically, elections for half the board seats are held in November of even-numbered election years.
  • When is the next election?�November 8, 2022! All 15 seats are up for election because of redistricting. 7 members picked at random will serve two years while the other 8 serve their full 4-year term.
