What is EndNote?

  • EndNote is a reference management software that allows you to:
    • Create a group of references.
    • Store and organize your references.
    • Generate in-text citations with a formatted bibliography.

Downloading EndNote

  • NYU provides free access to Endnote for students and staff.

Getting Started with EndNote

  • To be able to fully access Endnote, you have authenticate that you are an NYU student.

Understanding EndNote

  • Reference list shows all citations
  • Groups panel helps to organize references.
  • Summary and PDF tabs show citation details and full-text.

Creating EndNote Library

  • Click “File” and open “New”.
  • Name and save your new library.

Organizing References

  • Choose “Library” in the Toolbar.
  • “Define Term Lists…”.
  • Select “Journals”.
  • Select “Import List…”.
  • Select the “EndNote” application.
  • Select the “Terms” folder.
  • Select the “Medical.txt” file.

Creating a Group

  • Choose the “Groups” tab on your EndNote Toolbar “Create Group”.

Adding References from PubMed to EndNote

  • After conducting your search on PubMED, select the references that you want to export to EndNote.
    • Select references “Send To” “Clipboard”.
    • Once you are finished selecting and saving references, select “Clipboard” “Send To” “Citation Manager” “Create File”.

Finding Full-Text PDFs

  • Select the group that you created with the references you wish to use.
  • Select “References” at the Toolbar “Find Full Text”.
  • EndNote will start searching for the full text (PDF) of the selected articles.
  • An image of a paperclip will show on the far left of the articles where a full text was found.
    • If not found, the summary section may either provide a link for you to download and add it manually to EndNote or has not found a trace of the full text at all.
    • You can also edit PDFs.

Importing References in Microsoft Word

  • Click “EndNote 21” or “EndNote 2025” at the Toolbar in Microsoft Word.
  • Click on the small arrow next to the “Insert Citation” icon and select insert citation.
  • Perform a search to locate the reference you want to insert and select it.

Importing References in Covidence

  • Click on “File” in the Toolbar and “Export”.
  • Export references from EndNote in RIS or XML format.
  • Upload the exported file into Covidence.
